slop in driveline
Ok just got my transmission rebuilt and this is what I was told. The coupling had to be shortend? Cut and rewelded. And there is movement in the torque tube shaft, it rotates about 1" to 1.5" without the clutch depressed. looking at others it should only move a little bit. Whats going on up the shaft?
I know that doesn't sound right!

the coupling shouldnt have been touched at all.
as for the slop, on the clutch there is a "limp-home" provision that allows the engine to still drive the trans if the clutch disk fails. its got a set of interlocking tabs that youre probably moving between.

V2 rocket has pretty much nailed it spot on.
Sounds like one of the original rubber centered discs. Did you pull the maintenance cover on the clutch and see if any rubber chunks fell out? If so it indeed sounds like you've got a pooped out disc man.

As stated above you have 2 issues:
1. Your rubber center clutch is toasted and you need a new clutch kit;
2. You need a new mechanic. Never shorten, cut, and re-weld a shaft coupling unless the mechanic's name is Delbert or Goober.

I have the same thing on my 86 turbo. I was told that the turbos do not have the rubber center and therefore the clutch wasn't the problem. I've been babying the car for a year now waiting on something to break or figure out what is going on. Ideas?

If you have slop in the driveline you can isolate the problem by getting under the car and removing the rubber cover on the rear of the torque tube. If you can turn the driveshaft a 1/4 rev or so with the transmission in any gear you have a clutch problem. Good luck, thats a ***** of a job, especially the first time.
