Post oil cooler gasket replacement

I am replaceing my oil cooler gaskets. The set came with the large case gasket two O rings a 1" od plastic ring and a 1" black rubber gasket and 4 1" od thin shims. I was told this was the "upgrade". Replaceing oil ring and such is no big deal but what about these shims and how do you know when it is properly "shimed" It really looks like a pain to get to and I really only want to bust my knuckles one time. I do however have my complete suspension and stearing off right now doing a major front end job as well as the oil pan gasket. Any help would be appreciated..

Hey David,

I've got my kit and I was hoping to do it this weekend. But the shims I'm not sure about. I just know from reading the tech. manual that it is suppose to be flush and you are to use shims to get it there. So I don't have a clue either.

But then again I'm a complete novice. Never done any real work on my car. I'm currently half way done replacing my rack and pinion. Just have to put the new one in now.

Sorry I'm not much help. Check 944-garage if you have not already. I think he has directions for it. Can't remember if it will be any help though.

Yea Skip. That was the article that I was thinking of.
David, sorry about giving you the wrong website earlier.

Can anybody comment on if these instructions are good/accurate on an early '85 944? Anything special you had to do? In looking at mine it seems to be very tight in there.
