Post Cold Air Intake Project Completed!

After about 2 months of school work and stupid retail work at my job i finally had enough time to complete my cold air intake. It was so simple to find the materials for it since I simply ran to The Home Depot for white ABS plastic piping.... well see for yourself the results.

OH! After testing it there is an improvement in throttle response. The sound of the exhaust is really deep and rich sounding too! I don't know if there is any horsepower improvement but relocating the cone filter definitely did some improvement to the "hot air intake problem"

Thumbs up

Great Job! Very ingenious. Can you tell me what materials were used so I can run Home Depot and do the same?

Thanks.

I will be writing a detailed instruction web page on it. But here is the link prior to completion

Nice job. I was thinking of doing the same last time I was at Home Depot but decided I wanted to try and find a lighter weight material. Has anyone thought of anything other thanthe pvc tubing? Also, FYI, 9xauto is selling a braket that helps secure your cone filter and throttle body once you remove the airbox. I found with my MSDS unit the filter flopped around a lot and actually got damaged by the headlight mech. so I created a makeshift braket from Home Depot. I'll let you know what the 9xauto unit looks like once I get the car back from the body shop.

I would've used the standard PVC glue for the job, then you would have better looking seams. Other than that, it looks great.

Have you tried popping up the headlights? It looks as though the filter might get in the way or damaged.

do a search in the archives... i think i remember someone on here saying that 9xauto bracket didn't fit and needed some rivets drilled out and new mounting holes.

hey guys since we are on this subject about making our own "cold air system" i noticed last night on http://www.davelength.net/car/bigsix.html that he has got an afm from an bmw e28 that came stock with the flange on the afm. i am in the proccess of getting one of these afm to see if the flange will fit our afm (since it is a bosch unit it just might) so off to the junk yard i will go.

this will hopefully save a little for the adapters and also its is contoured inside the adapter for better air flo i know that some of the **** that is made today is just a flange with a pipe welded to it, which in my opinion aint worth a crap in the performace and asthetics dept.

Hey, don't bother with the 9XAuto bracket, for about $5.00 dollars worth of thin (1/8 inch x 1.5 inch maybe, I don't recall) aluminum bar stock and some stainless fasteners I fabricated my own bracket based on the 9XAuto piece. All I had to do was put one 90 degree bend in the Al and add a subtle contour to flow around the plenum. I also had to remove my MSDS flange and drill a couple of holes to mount it to the bracket. The front part mounts to the same place as the old airbox and the rear mounts to where the dip stick tube bolts to the plenum. Works great and doesn't look totally cheesey.

I'll post a couple pics if any are interested.

Nice job.

If only it were so easy on the 951!
Gotta go with a metal on the 951 as in order to relocate it you gotta replace the rubber intake boot...that goes onto the turbo inlet! hot stuff...

The 9xAuto flange was fine; the bracket works, but I had to drill the rivets out and remount the bracket on the flange. It bolts up to the mounts for the stock airbox.

Adrial,
Intake tube could be plastic too, the last tube to turbo would anyway be rubber and that insulates plastic parts from turbo. There is cold air flowing and cooling things down.
After turbo air is hotter, and there could be problems with keeping joints clamped when plastic softens.

Eurospec, nice work, you got me thinking too. $200 for j-pipe is not reasonable. How to securely plug in other pipes (was there 3 connections)... thats the question.

I picked up that strutbrace from Black Forest/San Diego MotorSports over here.

I checked the clearance on the popup lights. THe only time it comes to hit the filter is when it closes....BUT its a light tap. After about a month of using it the filter is undamaged in that area. There is also a 1/8" clearance between that popup bracket and the cone filter itself when closed so sometimes it hits and sometimes it doesn't.

As for the seams.. yes I did use PVC pipe glue but i used valve cover gasket sealer to make the seals as well as PVC glued the filter in at the end with gasket sealant too. NO worries about cleaning the filter with the whole mechanism on it seeing that it cleaned up no problem for me! Just let it sit out in the sun for about 45 minutes like K&N tells you to do when you clean their filters.

Stay alert for the completion of my webpage instructions..
