944na... Ferrari Beater?!
A while back I happen to be thumbing through an old Road & Track and was reading the "15 yrs ago" column where they discuss the highlights of that month's issue 15 years earlier. The main review was of 4 GT cars; the 944na, 928s, 308gtbi (ferrari), and corvette. You may be (as I was) shocked to know that the winner of this subjective comparison was the 944na. I believe they credited the results with the 944's lack of faults or imperfections. Not bad for the smallest and cheapest of the bunch.
I am trying to locate the back issue, once I do I will try and have the thing scanned.

I have here in our library at work (we do car stuff) every single issue of Road & Track from 1975 to today. I was thinking about spending a few hours finding 944/951 articles/pictures and scanning a few.
If anyone has any other requests, I could most likely find other things.

I have a cool story about that issue.
I was at work, fixing a customers flat tire and he was talking to me about cars. He asked if that Porsche was mine, and I'm like yeah. He then made a remark saying, at least it isn't a 924.
Anyways, we were talking about it and other cars and what not. Then he left. About an hour later he comes back and hands me this magazine. It was August of '83. And he tells me to enjoy. So, I have it, haven't been able to read the whole thing, but I have looked through it. I'll scan it in when I get a chance, but the results are very pleasing.

That would be excellent if you could find that article (or and other 944 article for that matter). I would love to read it. Also, where can I find these brookland books with all the articles on a particular car?

The Brooklands Books are available from (surprise) Brookland Books. It is a mail-order catalog, and publishing house. They have a good selection of compilations of most articles on any particular model. The books are called "Gold Portfolios"--like the 944 Gold Portfolio. I ordered from them a few times and they always send me catalogs--not sure if they have a website--if not, the next time I receive a catalog, I will post the info. for those who are interested. The portfolios are really nice(I have the 924 and Jensen Interceptor--sweet car).

"Ferrari beater"? Isn't that a bit extreme? I mean, they're great cars and all. But...
When I think of a beater, it's something a bit more reliable... maybe an old Audi or VW...

I didn't see the article, but while searching for it I came across <a href="http://vista.pca.org/rrr/tech/faq15.htm" target="_blank">This List</a> listing just about every publication and their articles on the 944. Enjoy.

Jim the question was a retorical one. The review was a subjective one, however the underlying truth of the matter was that in its day the overall build quality and fun factor of the 944 surpassed that of significantly more expensive sports cars.

Rob, the response was intended as a humorous one... sorry if it fell flat & caused any anguish...
"Ferrari Beater"... "beater" as in the old, junky car some of us keep to drive in bad weather, haul stuff in, park in the wrong part of town... I read the title of the thread and had a mental flash of having a 944 na, and using a Ferrari as a beater...
The Audi / VW reference was because my last beater was an '89 Jetta, and my next one may be some form of Quattro'd Audi, if I can find a mechanically sound one that looks like nine miles of bad road...
