Question 944 Firehawk, what is it?

I was trying to find some information on the Firehawk series of 944 race cars. Does anyone have any information they could share?

Thanks,

Dave

My question originated after reviewing the 2002 PCA Racing Rules. I was looking to see what class my car would be in (stock '87 944), when I noticed a series of 944S, S2, and 968 Firehawk cars. Are these just 944 series cars with hybrid engines?

I think they just have special Firehawk chips and are a little more track-ready (I think they also have better intake and exhaust) than a stock 944. I believe they are aftermarket and have nothing to do with Pontiac's Firehawks. But I'm not too sure.

i would lean towards skwerl with that one. i was thinking it was a certain "series" that was produced, if not porsche then someone else, perhaps for racing purposes.

I know two folks with 968 Firehawk cars. If I remember correctly, the 968's have blueprinted engines, all sport suspension stuff, big brakes, fuel cell, cage, etc. Most of the interior appeared to be intact (that suprised me). I have also heard of 944 Firehawk cars, but no personal experience there.

I think a 958 Firehawk will run down into the 2:3x range at Road America. That's pretty zippy. Even the 951S's run around 2:50 unless you start to turn them into complete track beasts.

Keep the shiny side up,

There was a racing series in Canada called the Firehawk series that saw a variety of production based cars race on Firestone Firehawk spec tire. Several race prepare 968/944 cars competed in it, the series was very similar to the former Speedvision series.

The 968/944 cars were specially prepared for this series. One of the guys from my PCA region recently had some struts for sale from one of these cars.

If you have friends with Firehawk or Rothmans cars they are litterly sitting on pieces of history, only in Canada though as you guys donn't seem to know much about them. These cars donn't seem to depreciate and are getting harder to find. I know that the cars are well respected as race cars, as in the case of the Rothmans cars (944NA) they get automaticly promoted to PCA Club racing "H class" instead of the "I class" which the car should actually race in. The same maybe true for the Firehawk cars as well.

There was Firehawk series run by IMSA that was based in the US.

Y'all might be surprised at what all lurks on the web besides Rennlist....

Go to www.google.com and enter "IMSA Firehawk" (with the quote marks) as your search term. Then follow the links....

I stand corrected. It was IMSA sanctioned racing.

Hey Mark:
My CASC log book shows that my car was run in several FIREHAWK races here in Canada (1988). They were SCCA national races that the Rothmans cars were eligible for (and I always thought they were 944 S2's or 968's later on)
Regardless they were 2 hour endurance races that were at the tail end of the Rothmans Challenge Series (and I guess the best drivers from there were racing Turbo Cup in 1988)
Nice talking to you by the way....

Yeah, Google rocks. By far and away the best search engine I have used.
