Post Big Red on 951 fitting question

I have 16" stock boxster rims on my 87 951 and a friend of mine has 993TT Big reds for sale, and I was curious about the fitting. I have always heard u need at least 17" rims to house them.. but when I put the caliper in one of my wheels wheel, it fits inside. What is it about mounting that wont fit, is it the rotor, or till they all fit under my 16" Boxster rims?

The 993TT rotor is considerably larger than your NA rotor. That is what places the caliper further out and WILL cause it to interfere with the 16" wheels. You need at least 17" wheels to mount the big reds. Sorry.

im upgrading the brakes on the Turbo... but yes, they are still big. I held the calipers up against the stock 951 caliper, and I was blown away.
oh well. I'll just get some 17 or 18's instead, and get the brakes later

The prevoius owner of my race 968 cs had the design 90 16" wheels fit over the 993tt brakes. It was a close fit, but it worked. It seems to depend on what wheels you trying on. Some 16"ers will fit.

See, now im stuck. I'd rather upgrade the brakes before the wheels if possible - but I would hate to get new brakes and find out they dont fit

To get the big reds to fit under 16 inch wheels I don't think you can use the 993 turbo rotors. I bet you could get them to fit with some other rotors, but then why not go with S4 brakes? Those can def fit under 16 wheels (they came that way from the factory) look up prospeed motorsports, or any number of places and they can set you up with the adaptors and rotors (adaptors are the same as the ones for the big reds).

I would run S4 brakes on my 951, but having the early ofset I would have to have custom rotors made and for those kind of prices it is just not worth it.

How does the stopping power with the S4 brakes compare to that of the 993TT's?

I have always heard that you must have 17" rims too. But my 968 CS have 993TT rotors (two piece) and 993 tt calipers. And the 16" design 90 wheels do fit. Here are some pictures.

Interesting, the thing keeping me from installing bigger brakes is that I wouldn´t be able to use my Design 90 wheels for the winter...
Do you really have the 330 mm discs?

I see that your car is registered in Sweden, but you live in Norway?

What size are your design 90 wheels, do you know? If they are the same size (or smaller) than my stock Boxster rims, then I should be golden...right?

The 968CS have 993TT (322mm) brakes. The pictures are taken by the previous owner which indeed is swedish. As seen on my website I currently have 17" wheels on it.

The 330mm brakes you refer to are Porsche GT3 brakes, they are mounted on the 944-968 turbo.

As has been mentioned there are some 16's which will fit with the Big Reds. Also keep in mind that there are at least 3 possibilites for rotors:
1. 993 twin turbo
2. 94 3.6 turbo
3. Rotor/Hat combos from the likes of 944enhancemet.com, VCI, Speedforce, and Lidsey to name a few.

What you end up with is several diff. rotor hat heights. These will space the caliper closer or further away from the wheel. I believe the 993tt hat is the shortest which would put the caliper closet to the wheel. The 94 3.6 turbo is in between the 993tt and the VCI hats on my car. The delta is about 1/2 inch. Thats a bunch when your trying to get a 16 to fit.

As to cost I have found that the 94 3.6 turbo rotors are the cheapest and they are cast drilled.

Alan
