Post Do you want to see what pain is?

So...I had kind of a strange day. I drank about 10 or so beers thursday night (I really needed it after working non-stop on my car all week and not really drinking for 2 weeks before that), passed out at 1 in the morning, was woken at 3, passed back out at 5, and woke up at 7 on friday morning...I've been awake since then. I talked to the guy Heath that owns evolution motorsports (an import tuner shop kind of place) on thursday night and he told me he has to do a tune up on a camry which should take him 3 hours, and to come by around 3 to get the axle replaced on my celica (I have no where to work on it as my 951 is tying up both my storage space and my lifting equipment at the moment). I call at 3 and his office lady Emily tells me that he is still busy with the tune up and will call me when he is done, which shouldn't be too long. Around 7 pm, I get sick of waiting around my house (I was planning on going back to my home town after I got the axle replaced) and go up to his shop. Toyota sent him the wrong tensioner for the timing belt on the camry so he spent some time wrestling with that, got distracted, a guy came by to pick up his hybrid that Heath built for him (a nissan NX2000 with a modded SR20DET-S13 making around 300 HP) and needed some last minute issues worked out with it, etc. So, anyways, its 1:00 am before the guy with the NXSR20 is happy and leaves (that thing is ***** to the walls fast, BTW...it is definitely a 12 second car) and Heath still has to finish the tune up on the camry...I have nothing better to do, so I help him out a bit by fluctuating the gas while he sprays intake/TB cleaner in, help bleed the coolant, etc. Its 3:00 am by the time my celica goes up in the air to go under the knife. The old driver's side front axle comes out with a bit of a struggle, and as we go to put the new one in, we first notice that it doesn't have the ABS ring on it, and then we notice that it isn't even for an all-trac...its probably for a regular celica. On top of this, my wheel bearing is toast (3rd one since I have owned the car a little over a year).

Anyways, we put the celica back together so I have something to drive home (I still need an axle and a wheel bearing) and Heath's mom's boyfriend came from out of town to have Heath help him fix his grenaded 931. Aparently, he bought this beat up 300,000 mile example for $800 in decent running condition, then the timing belt snaps. Not a big deal...its not an interference motor. He gets that fixed, then is driving over a bridge and hears "BOOM!" and the car stops working. He has it towed to Heath's shop, and this is what they found:

So...a piston grenaded from detonation, also doing combat with part of the head. He gets the head machined for $175, buys 1 new stock sized piston, a new set of rings for all the pistons, and some new bearings and seals for other parts of the motor. On top of that, the turbo was on its way out so he got a used 931 turbo from partswerks, as well as a rebuild kit. He also got the crumpled front right fender and section between the taillights fixed in Heath's body shop. It must be nice having a girlfriend who's son happens to own a nice shop and is a proficient mechanic. Anyways, that first picture was what pain is. Here are some more pictures:

Here is a shot of the whole engine bay. This thing was covered in oil, but after a case of brakeparts cleaner, it came out looking somewhat better:

Here you can see the grenaded piston next to the rest of the pistons:

I have no idea how CIS works...I understand EFI, but CIS seems weird...is it like a distributor for fuel? It boggles my mind almost as much as carbeurators:

Here are a couple of shots of the new mahle piston he got...notice how the cup in the center of it is offset while on the other pistons it is centered...do you think he got the wrong piston?:

And finally here is a picture of the entire car...you can see some of the body work being done. He either wants to paint it red or black:

I watched them drain the oil and transaxle fluid, but by then it was already 6:30 am and we were all tired so we called it a night. I'm going to help the guy powdercoat some stuff tomorrow (I think he is doing valve cover, intake manifold, and timing belt cover...probably all in red) and maybe help spin a few wrenches since it is an interesting project (and they are replacing the piston and ring set inside the car...they aren't dropping the motor...and they expect to have the car running sunday) but now I sleep. I hope you all enjoyed.

Oh yeah...I told him I would sell him my old rear shocks (they have to be better than the 300K mile ones that didn't pass the 1 bounce test on his), front springs, and torsion bars when I get them out of my car (not any time soon...may a couple of weeks) for cheap. He also wants to buy my fuchs. I may get rid of some of the car junk that I would otherwise have ended up collecting.

Heath thinks he should intercool the motor, and I agree...170 HP non intercooled would probably be closer to 200 HP with a cooler charge...I told him to find a used 951 intercooler and have heath make the pipes for it...will this fit in the vented nose panel (obviously brakets will have to be fabbed, but that is easy)? I also told him to get some 944 front fenders and the 924 carrera GT rear fender buldges to complete his car with the fuchs...I don't know how much he is trying to spend on this project though...how much could 944 fenders be found from a junkyard in good condition for? How much to fiberglass carrera gt fender buldges cost? I think he could turn this thing into a very nice car once he gets it painted and gets his seats re-upholstered.

Ribs; To paraphrase the old saying " just as I was feeling sorry for myself for having no shoes, I met a man who had no feet ". I thought I was the most unfortunate Porsche owner in the world last Saturday. A beautiful day, a good cigar and the promise of a blast up my favorite 2 lane. I went out and checked my oil and tire pressures, and when I sat down to start, the clutch pedal went flat. Looking underneath, I found that my slave cylinder had puked its contents onto the ground. I was bummed, and went back into the house to find my parts. Now in retrospect, it looks like I'm not nearly so bad off as I thought. Best of luck on your car.

Hey Ribs
I had a few friends that got killed by drunk drivers. I know youll let a freind that drank less
than you drive.

Do me a favor dont be so kind as to share how much you drank. You turn an otherwise
intelligent post into ...

to paraphrase your famous quoute:

Even if your sober for a few weeks....
<img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" /> <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" /> <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" /> <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
You're still an alcoholic!

I'm confused.

What does ribs drinking a dozen beers have to do with drunk driving? As far as I can tell, he wasn't driving afterward (or even walking very far)

Give the guy a break.

At least that is a 924 engine and not a 944 engine. If I remember correctly 924 pistons are ~$100 a piece, unlike $4-500 a piece for the 944 variety.

While I respect your choice not to drink, I think you should show ribs (and anyone else) some respect for their descisions. Trying to guilt someone into not drinking because someone you know got killed, or because you have some huge issue with it, is just pathetic.

Ribs has every right in the world to drink, I do too, and so do you. I understand that maybe this is your way of looking out for people, and "caring" about someone, but in the end, you have to let people live their lives, because that's exactly what they're going to do.

And you "seeing the writing on the wall" is really egotistical. You don't know ribs. You might think drinking is evil, and that anyone who drinks is stupid, and that's nice, just don't try to be such an holyer-than-thou *** about it.

I'll get off my soapbox about all that now, I suppose. This is so way OT now, it's not worth talking about, I shouldn't have even said anything.

Hey Dangermouse
You a rocket scientist cuz you told me what you think I was saying.

All i suggested was he not to share how much he drank. Stuff like that, and scamming insurance
companies with stories of avoiding an animal etc. come back to haunt you.

To quote the great prophet Louie DePalma
"Smoke your brains out crazy lady"

Some get offended by porno - I dont,
some get offended by retard jokes - I dont
some get offended by children bragging about doing stupid things - I dont either.

I knew you wouldnt understand!

Geez Master Bates, isn't there some WORTHWHILE cause you can undertake? Are you worried about the children on the list? Maybe they will see that their idol drank 10 beers and try to emulate him?

Oops, I reread your post, as it was quite baffling to me, and I see that you are not of the list police type, but are merely offering friendly legal advice. That's completely different. NOT.

I'm sorry, but your comments are completely uncalled for. (as are mine, but that never stopped me)

I am all for jumping on Ribs the second he drinks 10 beers and hops into his car. But he didn't drive drunk, operate firearms drunk, molest children, etc. So, I really could care less.

As for not telling the truth to a big mean corporate monster (can you tell where this is going?)...

OK, my turn... I haven't touched a drop of alcohol for almost 15 years (no prize for guessing why)... and just to let you guys know, that I am NOT the least bit troubled or offended by Ribs post.

Just don't drink and drive... but we know that anyway, I hope

I won't try to be the social police here, but saying I really needed a drink because I didn't drink much in the last two weeks hints at bigger problems.

While I agree ribs didn't drink and drive, needing a drink could lead to having the needed drink then driving. It looks like a slippery slope to me.

This is a "community" board, and it is a board for Porsche owners - many of whom are heavy drinkers and drive nicer Porsches than me.

I suggest Ribs look into the meaning of the statement he made and draw his own conclusions. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> o

Now that I've preached my bit <img src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" border="0" alt="[soapbox]" /> lets party! <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

FLAME ON BOYS! <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" />

Bates was just speaking out of pain in his first post. A little compassion -- all around -- is in order.
