Default Stripping and painting interior

Per the revised PCA club racing rules, removing carpets in stock cars is now legal. I had to pull my seats out to remove my belts (to have them rewebbed), so I thought that would be an opportune time to remove the carpet.

Here's a picture of what I was starting with (although I took the picture when I installed the roll cage a few years ago):

After pulling up the carpet, I found the easiest way to remove the sound deadening and tar paper was to use a head gun and a scraper that was about 3/4" wide. Then I used adhesive remover and coarse scotchbrite to get all the sticky goo up. That was the hardest part of the job.

I had some paint left over from when I painted the roll bar, so I went to work with a brush (I didn't want to deal with masking, spraying, overspray, cleanup, etc.).

This is one coat of paint, but I ran out before I could finish. I'll need to pick up some more...

I had removed some of the sound deadening before, when I put in the cage... And I took out the trunk piece a while ago. Yes, I still removed about 65 lbs of crap!!

What kind of cage is that?

65 lbs of goo is a lot. Well done.

I want to do this as well. But more for the reason of removing 22 year old nasty smelling german carpet.

Good Job!

Greg, I bought the cage in Canada, and was told that it was in a (non-factory) car that ran in the Rothsman/Playboy series... but I don't know if that's true. There's a diagonal brace that goes from the passenger foot well to the main hoop by the driver's head - but that's out in those pictures.

The actual carpet is a little over 20 lbs. I filled a hefty bag with over 40 lbs of goo, tar paper, felt, rubber and general sticky stuff!

Speaking of the carpet, I was going to put it in the basement - I wasn't going to throw it out, but I don't need it. The floor stuff isn't in great shape. It's gotten dirty over the years, and there are some little burn spots from welding in the car... The trunk pad is very nice. I'll entertain offers, if someone wants it...

Nice job - looks great!

Yeah, all that carpet/sound deadener/glue/seam sealer/etc is really heavy, once you get it all up and collected into a bag for weighing.

Removing the goo was the biggest PITA when I did mine. I used a heat gun and it helped but was still a mess.

I enjoyed doing mine

though my interior is not all in pace yet, I'm debating whether I want to paint it or do it some time later though

well done!

Just out of curiosity, how did you mount your quick release hub to the steering shaft? Can't tell from the pics.

I have one that looks similar to yours, but I'm not happy with it. It puts the steering wheel too far out. I need to find a way to reduce it by 3 inches or so.

Do it now... it will never be this clean or accessible.

It's hard to see in the pictures, but it's mounted on a hub that goes over the splined shaft. Yours is probably the same way. Do you have a dished or a flat wheel? That can give you a little adjustment.

I have a flat wheel. The problem is, I'm using a standard Momo hub. If the wheel was mounted to it directly, it wouldn't be a problem.
With the addition of the quick release, it sticks out about 3 inches too far.

I've made some measurements, and I believe I can modify the current hub.

But...before I do that....What kind/brand are you using? Is it shorter than a standard hub (about 4 inches)? If so, where did you get it?

Thanks!

I saved another 4 lbs (2 per side).

I had some webbing scraps, looped it and put a grommet in, cut a little slot in the door panel to pass it through, and bolted it to the sheet metal where the original arm rest/handle hooked onto.
