Post Side Markers Blinking With Turnsignals

As I was waiting for the red transparent paint to dry on one of rear lenses in the rear lens conversion project (and bulb upgrade), I rewired the rear sidemarkers to blink when turning.

It is quite easy if you can either clip, strip and solder 1 wire to an existing female spade terminal or cut both wires and just crimp a new spade terminal on. Took about 15 minutes per side to pull, do the change, and re-install. And looks pretty neat when you light it up in daylight; looking forward to seeing it in action at night. Should be safer, too, so flankers know what you are about to do. We don't need to ruin anymore of these babies. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

Haven't done the fronts yet, so don't know how fast that will go, but you really want to do this upgrade. <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />

When I get done with the thermal, life and light output tests on this project, I will write up a guide for the sidemarker conversion. Order bulbs and you get it.

And anyone else that wants it that doesn't want bulbs, I'll probably e-mail it to you, anyway. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I must say, the changes from this project are pretty impressive. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Do you have any pics of the wiring by chance?

Are you still using the original side marker bulb. They have one filament so do they now only come on when you use the blinker and no longer as night driving lights.

Naw, I haven't popped for a digital camera yet. If someone like Thad or Ryan in the MPLS area wants to take pictures, I will delay and meet up with them.

But unless someone tells me otherwise, after seeing the backup light quantity and quality of red painted backup & turnsignal lights vs. white and amber tonight in the dark, I will paint the right side, so that comparison on the same car in same conditions will be lost.

I won't go forward with things if I don't like them. You will have to take my judgement, I guess. It is pretty strict.

You can ask around on Rennlist if you suspect I'm a slacker on quality.

Ringo: Yes, using the original, well actually new original 5 watt, single filament, sidemarker bulb. There is a trick to this. And it only costs a few minutes of your time, a soldering iron, solder, some lined heat shrink, & silicon. Or a new female spade connector, and above. It is really pretty basic. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

I should be in the cities this weekend because I blew my tranny and I need to swap it. If I get it done I could come take a pic maybe.

jason 952, Guess you have a right hand model?

Of course your referance has no specific directions to 944 owners. Some of these guys are very afraid of the electrics! The site is good for the car, in particular. Same thing I'm doing.

I was willing to give the particular info for free to anyone that wanted, now I'm not sure. Let them work off your site. <img border="0" alt="[byebye]" title="" src="graemlins/wave.gif" />

Ryan, I know this is dumb, but I really want to get it done before this weekend and size things up. The replacement bulbs are so good it is like chasing after a girl. <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />

BAH! This was MY backshelf project for a few years now! I want front and rear to blink, and I want dual filament, also.

Ice - share the info, I'll do it your way!

thought it was good for general, not specifics. I would, of course, rather do it your way.

I'm not going to do this mod, but after reading about it something came to mind from my motorcycle days.

On most bikes the rear turn signal indicators do not light up until a right or left turn is switched on. So what people did to make them work as running lights is to use a small trailer wiring adapter from Wal-Mart. They didn't even need to convert to a dual filament bulb and that gave them running lights and then a brighter turn signal to use. The trailer kit is what makes the bulbs appear to be dual filament by adjusting the voltage going to them for a blink or a running light.

The trailer brake kit is something like 15-20 bucks from Wal-Mart. And of course it's function is to give the brake lights on trailers turn signal capability with only the one light on each side. So maybe using that kit (one at each end) will allow you to keep them lite continuously as opposed to turning off and on all together.

Like I said that was just a thought I had. I don't know if that will help or if there's an even simpler way to do that. I just threw that out there incase it helps.

Raceit, All I was trying to do is to get the sidemarkers to work as side markers in the normal fashion as well as flash. And do it cheap and simple.

Just moving the sidemarker ground from "normal" ground over to the positive feed for the turn signal accomplishes this. In the rear this is very easy to do as all the wires are sitting open in one place on the bulb backplate of the rear lens.

With this simple change the side markers function as per normal until you engage the turnsignal. If lights are on, when the turnsignal is engaged (i.e. flashes) it interrups the marker ground and makes it flash in alternate to the main turnsignal. If lights are off, things are reversed and the sidemarkers flash in synchronization with the main signals.

Simple, cheap and no need to buy any other gizmos. Well, that may not be exactly true. If your flasher relay is old and on its last legs it will probably fail with the extra load and you will have to spend 10 bucks to get a new fresh one. That is what happened to me anyway. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Hello Good People,

I tried this and it simply continued to blow the fuse to either the side marker, and sometimes the side marker and the rear turn signal. Could I have connected something wrong?

Side marker:
Positive wire(gray) untouched.
Negative wire(brown) connects to positive feed on rear blinker light(amber).

I went up to a 15amp fuse and it still blew out.
Any tips would be much appreciated.

T.I.A.

R.I.P. dear brother IceShark...
