It's a cool looking effect, not that I would ever want a car of mine done like that...
I do appreciate a patina on the right car though, there are a number of muscle cars thst look great with the battered street warrior look... as long as they perform.

I have met the owner of that car and followed along in the progression and demise of it. Mike is a really cool person, lives in TN as Sam stated, and is as big of a BMW fanatic as we are Porsche addicts.
When he got the car it started out as a nicely modded black e28. I think it suffered some front-end damage, resulting in swapping the hood, and front bumber parts. At the time, the trend was to intentionally rust the hood only. So Mike rusted the hood, then added his own roof-rack and some other things to obtain the euro rat rod look. It is not a 'rusty paint job' but rather the paint is removed completely, and then some type of acid is put on the metal to speed the rusting process. Thats about all I really know.

Most people either loved it or hated it. Eventually he decided to tip the scales and rust the whole car. Why not? Mike's main intention with this car was just to have some fun with it while he built his actual project car, an e36 M3 all modded out.
full rust:
The shark design you see was after the rust was sanded and cleaned off the whole car and then coated completely in motor oil to preserve a bit of the raw metal color. This is the point which I got to meet Mike and see the car in person in Tampa FL.
Shortly thereafter was the 1JZ motor swap... and then soon enough the rust took its final toll on the car and split the frame during another accident (if I recall correctly).
Here is what he bought as a replacement. And no I don't think this car will see any rust haha.
