Rear window tinting
Thought this was funny. Ive read the tons of old posts over the years stating how most professional places want nothing to do with 944 hatches. Anyhow i got the name of a guy from a friend of mind and brought my Jeep in earlier today too have the two front windows tinted (already have the factory smoked glass in the back). I asked him if he would be willing to do a 944 rear hatch and he kindly told me no f'ing way. . Said he had done 3 or 4 in his day, the last one being 10 years ago for a reason. He said he would call a few of his friend to see if they wanted to take a go at it.. . The guy told me the #1 reason he dosent want to do it is the black trim piece on the interior side of the glass flakes off and makes it a nightmare to cut the tint out. And like probably 95% of all 944's out there mine is starting to flake. Maybe i should find a guy that can reseal the hatch frame and redo all that first..
Still he told me expect to pay in the area of $400 just for that rear hatch, most of the cost due to wasted material from having to redo it.
I only want to get the rear hatch done with probably 50% tint just so it would cut down on the green house effect in the rear hatch. With the black hatch carpet the car turns into a sauna sitting in traffic and in staging / the pit on the track. I figure even a slight tint would help keep things a little cooler in the car. I need to call a few more local places to see if anyone wants to attempt it. My friend had his rear hatch done by a guy 3 years ago, but the hatch was off the car.. still it needed to be done in 3 pieces.

I did mine myself with the tint that does not have glue on it. It attaches with static electricity basically. I have done it twice because the first tint I bought was too dark and I could not see the state troopers coming up on me. I just easily pulled it off and re-did with a lighter 35% tint. It took me a couple of hours to get all the bubbles out. It has been there for 2 years with no problems.

I am going to do mine myself on my next hatch reseal (calling in the big guns this time... 3M Marine grade 5200... F'k that crap window weld... and some custom trim) going to have a go at the hatch glass at the same time!

I had mine done by a local professional window tint specialist. Paid around $240 total for the hatch, quarter and side windows completed. And that includes a lifetime warranty on both the tint and the work.... The hatch had to be done in three pieces, but it shouldn't be noticeable if done right. It took the best part of two hours for the job to be done.
If given the choice, take it to a place that has specialized in window tinting for many years. Don't try to save money by going to hole in the wall tint vendors, you'll get what you pay for. I tried two cheaper, less experienced vendors before going to the more renowned specialist. The cheaper vendors couldn't handle the job and never finished.

There is a guy near me who will do the whole car for $200 and I have seen probably a dozen 944's at his tint shop in the past 5 years. Apparently doing the rear hatch in 3 sections is the key to success.

When I had mine done I worked at an exotic auto detailer and there is a tint shop we send a lot of cars to so I got lucky and had my whole car down with 5% limo for 110 after tax and discounts. It took her 8hours to do the car and said she won't do another one, but in the end it looks great.

Hey mzman, know of any of those shops up in Edmonton, AB you could hook me up with?
I'd say the key to getting our cars tinted for cheap is knowing someone who will do it for cheap...
