way OT but this really sucks!
Was out running last Wed. night, something I have been doing for the past 30+ years, when all of a sudden I heard a loud pop from my right leg. After feeling intense pain my ankle rolled and I went down. I ruptured my achilles tendon.
After spending 4 1/2 hours in the emergency room waiting for the orthopedic surgen to show up I was told that my leg would have to be in a cast for the next 12 to 16 weeks.
I am so pissed off. I have waited 8 months for summer to finally arrive only to find out I am now going to be spending all of summer with my right leg in a cast.
Should make finding a job a lot more interesting.

I came very close to doing that about 6 weeks ago. I believe I just aggrivated the achilles since I was still able to walk on it (in no shortage of pain and hobbling though). All it took was an intense run with out enough proper stretching beforehand. I haven't been able to run for 4 weeks now.

wow, i'm sorry to hear that david!
As an avid runner myself, I'm always worried about my knees going bad. Never thought about the achilles going out. I sure hope you have a speedy recovery.
What preventative things can you do so this won't happen? Just pre-stretching? I NEVER stretch before, always mid run and after. I always told myself that stretching in the beginning didn't do anything for me.

When I ran in high school and college I never stretched and had no problems. I only started stretching, before runining, about 18 months ago when I figured that at my age (42) it would be the smart thing to do. Still have no idea why it happened.
The other thing that sucks is that I qualified to go to the nationals in TKD I sent in my non- refunable entry fee the week before.

Luckily yes I am. Right now I am debating on if I should have surgery or not. When I spoke to the surgeon last week he made it sound like there was really no advantage to having the surgery done. Since then I have been doing a lot of reading up on the subject and have found out the rate of re-tear for non surgical patients is 4 times higher 13.4% compared to 3% for surgical patients. Kind of makes me wonder now.

David,
Does he have you doing any isometric exercises for you leg that is in the cast to keep the casted muscles strong! If not, this is something often over-look'd and can greatly decrease your recovery time after the cast is removed!

Right now he wants me to do nothing. The current plan of action is to just keep it the cast for 12 weeks. This really concerns me as I am afraid the calf muscle is going to atrophy badly from not being used.
The other concerns I have is recovering full use of the leg and the chance of re-injuring it. Since I compete on the national level in Olympic style TKD sparring this is a huge concern for me.
I started stretching again last night and noticed already how much flexibility I have lost in such a short time. I do not want to even imagine how much I would loose in 12 weeks.
I called the doctors office today and have an appointment next week to re discuss having it surgically repaired.
PS: Just wanted to say THANKS to all that have sent their condolences.

David, I would seriously look into the surgery if that will have long time benefits. Many of my friends have had rotator cuffs torn, etc.
I'm actually surprised that when I was ran over by my '95 'Vette, that I didn't have more damage; compression breaks on achilles heel, ankle, and fibula. All I feel like saying right now is the problem started with running out of gas while pulling into a gas station + 2 body builders anxious to help...
Goes to show you never know. Sorry you can't drive, dude, that sucks more than anything! But don't do what is convenient in helping the tendon; do what is right for you.
