Failed CA smog...

Been using high concentrations of ethanol run through stock fuel lines for 4 years and no problems. No swelling, no cracking. When I first used it I checked constantly. Only problem was a little gas varnish sludge in in-tank fuel filter. Ethanol strips 20+ years of it from the tank walls and sends it through the filter. 2 tanks full and it was gone. Our gas in Cali is already min of almost 6%.

Ya, California is pulling some really hard crap on smog for older cars. Making you pass a higher standard than was required when the car was new. ......BS...... If you have to relace a cat , you are required to use a newer type cat. Passing visual just for starters is a bitch. I'm moving back to cali, but keeping my registration in KY.

Methanol is quite corrosive.
Ethanol has been used in 10% concentrations for 20+ years in the majority of gasoline in the US. Ethanol is not an issue (but it will 'clean-out' your fuel tank, so changing filters after a tank or two of E85 is a good idea).

I always confuse the two. I was thinking of methadone, a benign substance used to wean addicts off of Twinkies.

having the same issues with passing. I'm just a bit high on nos and I've done everything mentioned here, except doing the test with xylene. Just took the test again for the second time and again just over the limit on nox, it sucks! In talking with the shop owner he said that in July the state is changing the test procedure, making it even more difficult to pass. Gotta love f-in CA.

Good news! In case anyone's curious about how this story ends, I managed to pass (by the skin of my teeth) CA smog. I took the advice here and got the SFR 3" cat, sleeved to fit the Lindsey exhaust. Also put the stock fuel pressure regulator back on and adjusted the FQS for 91 octane gas. Got the work done at Heyer Performance in Mountain View--great shop!

Looks like I've got 2 more years.. gonna miss my unrestricted exhaust though.

Do what I do on the cats. I have flanges on the ends and only a specific Cat for Smog test. The rest of the time I use free flow cats.

think if i leaned out the whole part-throttle fuel table just a little bit (like .3 afr) and ran like 91 octane and left timing stock, it would burn really clean?
