Default What can be done to the front of the engine with it in the car?

Plan on doing my timing belt, balance shaft belt, and water pump. Was thinking about doing the seals. How much is doable with the engine in the car?

you can do belts/hoses/waterpump with engine in the car easy, plenty of room

if you want even more room, take the fans/radiator off

I resealed the whole front of a motor with the fans and radiator out while doing a water pump/belt job.

Even the rear seal can be done. However, you do have to remove the bellhousing/clutch to get to it.

Only the rear main seal and the oil pan gasket would take lots of time. Everything else is easy to get to while you're in there.

Finishing up belts/wp change on mine. Checked my seals, but it looks like they were done not that long ago. Belts and wp didn't need to be done, once I had the covers off...but had the parts and figured I might as well do it now, so I knew the mileage they were replaced at. Also replaced the cam tower gasket, vac lines and other odds and ends. All with the motor in place. Definitely get a deep 24mm socket for the crankshaft pulley bolt. I took mine out with an extension and std 24mm socket and it was a pain with the fans and radiator in place. With the deep 24mm, it is a little shorter than that combination and much easier to do the job with rad and fans in place. Good luck on doing the job. I definitely would recommend getting Arnnworks tools...the timing belt tension tool is great! Easy to use too!

I've redone my whole front end, belts and everything with the fans on. Just got bloody knuckles in the process

All of it. To make room pull the radiator and fans. You should pull the fans at minimum however.
