yeah, I would think it would be something other than the trany.

This could be your CV joints starting to show some age. Is the vibration more pronounced under heavy load? I found that pulling the axles, greasing the joints, and swapping side (left to right) eliminated a similar problem I was having, and it's a good maintenance item to tackle in any case if the car has 60K or better mileage on the original CV joints.
