83 NA Wheel Options
I an 83 NA with cookie cutters. What are my wheel options? I want phone dials or the cup twists ( i think thats what they are called) but will these mount correctly? I dont want them to stick out of my car liek a mexican king or nothing. Will I need wheel spacers to mount these? Also what are my max widths that i can have without sticking out past the fenders and looking awkward?

Porsche has two offsets, early and late. Your car is the early offset. It will not work with post-85 wheels without spacers. I'm pretty sure they made phonedials in the early offset though. Anything from newer cars (D-90's, Turbos, C2's, etc.) will NOT fit without spacers. You could always get some Fuchs, but those can be pretty pricey.

your options for early wheels are cc's which you have, fuchs, either 15" x7 and 8 which some cars came with ( i have one with that, and am trying to complete a set for my 84) or fuchs 16" x7 all around, which are on my 84 now, or your final option, the phone dials. the 85/2 and 86 cars came with 15" phone dials in the early offset, which i had on my 84 for awhile, but they're back on the 85.5 now. if you dont want to spend alot, get some phone dials and refinish with some duplicolor, or if money is less of an object get some nice fuchs. personally i love the fuchs, and i think i'll put the 15x7&8 as soon as i finish the set on my 84, and save the 16" fuchs for special occasions, and the cc's for track use or something. as far as late wheels you can do it but you'll need spacers. i prefer the older style fuchs, and the cheapness of not having to get spacers

I have knockoff 993's from Discount Tire for my 86 Turbo (were also on my 85.5 N/A). They are available in the early offset. I had to ask for them specifically, they're not in the standard catalogue. I can email the info. They were around $250 each and my center caps fit perfectly

You use spacers on early cars to get to late offset, so the offset on a later car is already too big.

You can fit almost any Porsche wheel on an early offset car. The early offset is 23mm and the late is 52mm (I think). You need spacers for late wheels on an early car. You can't use early wheels on a late car. They will stick out from the fenders and look retarded. Confused yet?

They're Frank Hartman wheels - 993 copies. Fronts are 17X7.5 (5-130), rears are 17X9 (5-130). The tires I'm running are 235/45-17 on the front and 255/40-17 on the rear. I got'em about 3 years ago in Chicago. HTH.

Hi, can you give me a link or a name to the knock off twists? and hte knock off cups? Any problems with knock off wheels? Maybe i should just stick to 85.5 & 86 phone dials, i really like the way they look, but polished center fuchs look pretty sweet, then again i look at them and look at my walle, then just look at the cookie cutters and think, damn... im thinkin spacers arent the way i want to go anymore either... so early offsets, anyone got a set up for sale?

Race Car
The drawback to the knockoffs is their weight, some of them are very heavy (up to 10 lbs more than "Porsche" wheels) and a 17" will be heavier than a 15-16" wheel. 5 to 20 lbs per corner doesn't sound like much but 1 lb of unspring weight equals 4 (IIRC) lbs elsewhere in the car as far as what it will do to your handling. Adding Rotating weight will affect acceleration and braking (think of 4 flywheels).
PDs are available in early offset in both 15" and 16" and can be found at very reasonable prices.
quote:
Originally posted by ERAU944:

I have all three, 16" Fuchs for (summer) street tires, 15" PDs for snows and 15" CCs with R compounds on 'em. I would have liked 15" Fuchs for the R compounds (save >1 lb per corner), but my wife hid the checkbook!

my porsche manual says the 16's are 7 all around for the option. 15's were 7 and 8 for that option. the turbos had 16x 7 and 8, i know that, but in the factory manual it says only 7's all around for 16s. weird.

that could be possible, all the manuals we have say 16x7 only. and thats what i had on my car. i just changed to the cc's to wear the tires on those for a bit. all my 16" fuchs are 7", part number 911.361.020.44
