Default expansion valve thingy question

Got the expansion valve out today. On the inlet side, there was a small rubber insert that fell into the engine bay, somewhere. The new valve doesn't have one.

How important is/was this small rubber sleeve?

Only bits shown with the diagram are the O-rings! this is a late cars plumbing!

Deteriorated rubber from the hoses collects in the EV, usually as a gooey mess, but it could form a small ring that you are mistaking for an O-ring?

If you are referring to the foam protection on the copper line in the picture, It provides protection and sealing for the copper line between the plastic housing.
Find a piece of foam or a piece of a house door cloth/foam air gap seal to replace.

It's definitely not an o ring or anything that worked its way up to the EV. It is a small rubber insert/sleeve that fits inside the inlet of the valve. It fell out when I removed the old one. It's about 3/4" long tapered black rubber tube.

I was just going to omit it and install the new EV today after flushing the a/c system. The flush was good (no sludge or blockages). But the new EV seems to be the wrong part...it's a mirror image of the correct part with the larger outlet and smaller inlets reversed...doesn't fit. Back to partsgeek for a refund.

Now to find the correct EV for my '86.

The black outer cork/rubber/tar insulation is called "prestite" and is available at any local hvac supply house.

I'd post pics but can't upload since I'm just a "user" and not a member.

In searching for the correct EV, a block style EV keeps coming up at some parts houses. Is this a suitable replacement? How does one deal with all the extra inlets/outlets since the original only has one of each?
