Post Lost oil pressure

This may not be the best question to ask but......

I have lost the oil pressure on my '87 944 na.

As I was driving the light came on as I was getting in the throttle going up hill. I thought this was just the low level light (which comes on at about 3/4 up the dip stick).

I looked at the oil pressure gauge and it was between 1 and 2 bar. This is usually where it runs when the engine is warm.

As I continued to drive between PA and GA, the light seem to be staying on longer. However the pressure gauge continued to stay at its usual place and there was no increase in the water temp.

Several days later, I checked the oil, added some just for good measure, and started back to PA. When the engine was cold I had good pressure. As the engine warmed up the same thing started happening again. The new timing belt (4000 miles) was just just adjusted about 3000 miles ago and is tight.

What are your thoughts??????

1)How much pressure are you showing when its cold? 5 bar?

2)Is the oil light the only warning light on?

I'm kind of thinking that the oil level sensor may be dying a slow death but that's entirely dependant upon your answer to the first two questions.

My cars have usually run at least 3 bar when crusing and up to 5 bar when pushed. Running 1-2 bar would scare me and I am thinking saving for a rebuild may be a good thing. It is MUCH CHEAPER to catch this before the rod bearings are gone as there is quite a list of parts that need replacement after total failure and it seems like they average $250 each!

What oil are you using? quality and viscosity can affect pressure readings. My normal oil has been 20/50 or 15/50.

Possibly there coulb be a problem with guage or sender. Hook up a mechanical guage in the system and see how the readings compare.

Also when cold I haev 4-5 bar and it goes down some when warmed up.

From my experience, when my 87 S is running at idle on level ground it reads between 3 and 4 on the oil pressure gauge depending on how full the oil is. When driving under acceleration it is pegged at 5.
1 to 2 on the oil gauge sound really low, I have never seen that. If you are sure you have oil, I would look for mechanical failure.

This is pretty much the way my car used to act (except for the warning light). My car was running 5bar cold, 2.5 warm... and then all of a sudden it started going at about 4 bar cold and 1.8 - 2bar warm. I was using 10W30 oil, so I think that was part of the problem, as it was starting to get hot here (Texas).

I switched to 20W50 and now it goes to around 2.5 - 3 bar when warm.

If you led a clean life, it is a guage or sensor problem.

If you haven't been perfect but haven't been too bad either, perhaps the crankshaft pully is loose and the oil pump isn't pumping.

If you have led a normal life, it's time for a lower end rebuild. (sorry) If the rod bearings have not totally failed you may escape having to change the oil pressure relief valve, its brother on the other end of the head, the lifters, the oil pump, the oil cooler, one or more rods . . . and take Everything apart to clean the block out.

Good Luck
