Default Belts are done. Whats the ticking noise!

As a newb to the infamous belt job it took longer then it probably should have. I also did seals and waterpump as well though.
So its all buttoned up and there is no whining from the belts but now I have a loud ticking noise coming from under the cam cover that wasnt there before I started. WTFO
Could it have anything to do with the tension of the timing belt?

How long did the job take? If the car sat long enough the oil could have drained out of the lifters.

most likely the lifters. let it run for a while, itll go away. unless they are bad then you need new ones.

Is has been sitting a while. (3 months) I also did an oil change. So let it run to get some oil back up there?

You can stick a piece of vacuum hose in your ear and use the other end to pinpoint where the sound is coming from. It could be an exhaust leak...

The old playing card in the spokes noise...check the rotor and distributor cap. The cap is a PITA to get on straight. Could also be the balance shafts belt hitting the cover. I would not run it until you figure it out as it is not a normal sounding noise.

I just noticed this is an S2. Noises under the cam cover should be taken very seriously. The cam chain tensioner may be worn out and that would be very bad if it fails.

I went over and listened to it this evening with my stethoscope. Seems to be cylinder #4. Loud ticking, definitely not the normal sounds a 944 makes. Did not sound like rod knock.

The idle is a little lumpy, under normal ~1000 rpm idle...I thought maybe a misfire and pulled the plug. It looked normal.

If the timing was off even a tooth, you'd have an issue in all the cylinders, right? And....it'd be pretty hellaceous, right?

I assume it sat with the plugs out for quite a while, so you could rotate the engine easily?

The owner left the plugs in the whole time. I pulled #4 plug just to look at it this evening.

How long did you let the car run for (at idle) and are you building oil pressure? If you let all the oil drain out of the lifters over the course of 3 months, it could take every bit of 15 minutes or more to get them to stop ticking.

I'm sure you checked, but.....you're SURE you're getting good oil pressure? If you get that thrust washer on backwards (on the crank) you won't be. And that could explain the lifters not filling/ticking at the top of the motor.
