Question 944 second gear syncro

I have a grinding while shifting into 2nd. I am going to replace the syncro. Does anyone know where I can find a breakdown of the tranny so I can have a visual of the diassembly? Has anyone done a synco before? Is it hard? Thanks for your help.

The Factory Service Manuals (6-volume set) have a complete illustrated guide of all transmission work.

It is not easy, and requires special tools - I have an inspirational transaxle laying lifeless in the garage - waiting for me to fix it, or shoot it. Bullets are cheap.

Good Luck!

Keep this going. I have the same problem and was planning to do it this winter. Is it any different that a 901 box?

Oh yes, you do need special tools. Fortunately, my partner and I are starting a transaxle rebuilding company, and we have all the tools necessary. We have two rebuildable 944 core transaxles on hand(one '86 N/A, and one '84). We can either rebuild yours, or you can buy one of our rebuilt units. Either way, you get a one year warranty, and a transaxle rebuilt to the factory specs, using only the highest quality German factory tools. We charge $350 labor + parts. If you want one of our rebuilt units, we will need a $300 core charge (refundable upon receipt of your rebuildable transaxle). If you want us to rebuild yours, there is no core charge. For more information email us at rodcotransaxle@attbi.com.

Best regards,
Glenn and Rod
