Default Rear speakers

To those who recently asked about replacing the rear speakers. '86 N/A They are 4"x6" speakers. Didn't remove the side windows. Removed the two screws holding the speaker grill part to the body. Pulled the weather strip off at the door edge. Gently pull the bottom of the speaker grill piece away from the side of the car. Go slowly, it will go far enough to get your hand and a right angled phillips screw driver in there. The vinyl trim did pull out from under the window seal (you can get it back under later) Undo the four screws holding the speaker. Unhook the speaker wires. Don't drop the screws or the speaker wires inside the body. Reverse the process to put it all back together with the new speaker. If you pulled the trim out from under the window molding I used a popsicle stick that I cut the rounded end off so it was flat. Made a small hook out of a coathanger to get under and lift the rubber window seal and used the popsickle stick to push the vinyl back under the seal. Replaced both speakers in less than an hour.

I recently went this route to, and gently pulling the vinyl out is so easy it would be just silly to remove the rear windows IMO. Took me 20 minutes per side on my first try.

What 4x6 speakers did you put in?

I also have an 86, so I cant put in anything larger without cutting. Its odd. I replaced the front speakers with some decent Boston Acoustic 4x6, but the rear stock speakers are WAAAY louder. Only, they cant handle any bass whatsoever and like to make fart noises.

generally speakers with low power handling are a bit more efficient. they could also have a different resistance, which would throw balance out of whack.

and i modded a bit to fit some re 6.5's. they sound awesome.

Did the same thing in my S2...got the right angle, ratcheting screw driver at Sears for about $7. I just ordered the stock speakers from Porsche (they came from Germany via Sunset Porsche and were new, made recently in some Eastern block country with the 944 part # on them) and dropped them right in..didn't want to mess with a chance that they might not fit. The audio improvement was phenomenal given that the foam in the old speakers was long gone. I save the audiophile listening for home so the quality of the car speakers was not critical.

Lots of info in other threads regarding what speakers will fit our cars. The rears are easy. Many, if not most, 4x6's will fit. The fronts are another matter entirely. Almost nothing is a perfect fit. I was finally able to source some Alpines out of the U.K. that drop right in and allow the stock grills to fit fllush.

Alpines all around is a significant improvement.
