Default CV Bolts sheared off , how F'd am I ?

Just replaced the drivers side CV axle about 2 months ago.
Was making a short run to parts store for 29mm socket for temp sensor (only had 1-1/8 socket :-( ) Anyway, pull out of lot, slight acceleration and POP !!!

Crawled under and saw CV hanging .. Figure, OK just jack it up and retighten .... right !!!!

All but 3 were sheared off !!! tightened those and limped home.

whats the best way to remove the remaining bits that are sunken in mounting plate ?? ( Keep in mind - in a parking garage, not a shop ).

luckily Porsche dealer is just 14 or so blocks away.

side note: at least I can get my fan temperature switch replaced :-)

Unbolt the remaining 3. Remove the axle. With no torque on the head of the remaining bolts they should just come right out. If there is nothing to grab onto get yourself a reverse drill bit or bolt extractor. Should be easy unless your have loctite on there.

they are sheared off inside the mounting plate on the transaxle.

This has happened to me a couple times.

I was able to use a regular drill to just spin them out the other side. Didnt even have to use a bolt extractor.

I was going to suggest that, I work at Audi, where there is usually not enough clearance to run them out the back side.

Once the bolts come in from Pelican @ $ 0.75 ea (Porsche had to order @ $5.63 ea)-
I'm gonna try removing the nut that holds the flange shaft on, so that I can remove them from outside vehicle. In the meantime, gonna drive on 3 of them with my fingers crossed and AAA card in hand.

Is it possible to over torque them ??
I don't have a torque wrench, and have a very heavy hand.

May I suggest some of these:

Will fix your problem permanently. A torque wrench is not that expensive. These bolts only require ~31 ft lb of torque (IIRC), so YES, you can overtighten them, especially considering the OEM version are stretch bolts.

Arrgh !! seems the 7mm nut holding the plate shaft is an Allen , not a bolt ....

Gladly!! I know just about every, wire, nut and bolt on that vehicle. I just recently sold my 87 4000 quattro. Sad to see her go but I have a porsche habit...

What was I thinking?!?

I'm still really new to Audi. In a month or so I'm tackling the head gasket on it... then a CV joint... then suspension... then some electrical issues (power seat, window regulator)... then somewhere way down the line a little bit of body work!

Looks to be an interesting project. Mind if I PM you for advice every now and then?

it all started when you got pulled in by the fine driving qualities of the "nine-four-four" - one of the most seductive cars ever.
