Post How Do You Get Those Darn Sticky Weights Of The Outside Portion Of Your Rim????

Trying to prep the rims for the new S-O3's and the previous owner let someone put those ugly annoying looking stick on weights on the outside of the rim. How do you get these off without scratching up my rims by prying them off with a screw driver (eeekkkk).

Here is a picture of one of my wheels with the wheel weight in the upper left corner (around 10 o'clock).

Thanks,
Cory

Just use an ordinary knife. If you're careful the weights can be removed without hurting the wheel. You'll also need a cleaner to remove the leftover adhesive afterward.

Thanks Trevor. That was my original idea but wasn't sure and didn't want to scratch my babies (lol). Would regular adhesive cleaner work?

Thanks for the quick response!

hey i took some off my wheels, i took a butter knife and wrapped 3 layers of electrical black tape around the non sharp edge. then pried it off with the sharp edge. This way the only part of the knife that touches the rim is covered with 3 layers of rubbery tape.

Try heating them up with a hair dryer or something and they'll probably come off easier..

hair dryer never works. use the spray-on graffiti remover or 3M adhesive remover to remove the leftover adhesive.

for what it's worth, the wheels are supposed to be balanced on the inside AND outside of the rim, makes for a better balanced rim to have the weights on the inside and outside. on a wider rim, though, that could be accomplished by placing the weights on the most outboard position inside the rim.

Unfortunately, it may be those weights were needed for balance. Many wheels need weights both on the inside and outside to achieve balance. I agree, they don't look great, but they serve a signifcant purpose...

As for adhesive remover: Goo Gone...

BTW, those wheels are awesome .

I hate those damn things. Another vote for Goo Gone. It takes all that crap off and smells good to boot.

Ahhh, the secret tools - POPSICLE STICKS and PAINT STIR STICKS FROM HOME DEPOT!!!

Get a good supply of these and while you're at it, raid Starbucks for the wooden stir sticks. These are amazing little tools to scrape adhesive, use as pry bars, or leveraging pads. Almost endless uses.

In fact, if the doors in your house need shims on the hinges - yep, you guessed it, use the coffee stir sticks - almost perfect 1/32" thick shims. I know lots of finishing carpenters who use these things!!!

Take them to any good tire shop. At my shop I have a plastic tool that looks like a large flat blade screw driver. It works great without scracthing. Then use solvent to clean the residue off.
