Vacuum Line Help
There is a vacuum line that runs from the top of the brake booster, across the back of the engine bay, splitting some where in the middle. One side of the split heads to the green canister on the passenger side. The other heads through the firewall.
The line into the firewall snapped and I'm wondering what it goes to. Can I run the car without it? While we're on topic, what's that green canister do anyway? Can I run without the entire line and just plug the connection of the brake booster?

I was checking around on PET, and it says that the green canister is a "vacuum reservoir". It appears that the line runs inside the car to three "vacuum units". It would make sense that they are the air vents at the left, center, and right of the car. Will my vents just never open then if I don't have this line?

I would also like to know what that green canister is for, I've seen it in pictures but I don't know what its for.
far as your vacuum line, the cheap way of fixing it would be to go your local auto parts shop, autozone etc, and get a vacum line that has a larger diameter than the old line. use this hose to make a bridge between the two broken sections of old line. the inside diameter of the new (autozone) hose should be the same as the outside diameter of the old (porsche) hose.

The canister holds vacuum during accel and in boost situations on turbo cars. The vacuum is used to operate the climate controls.
EDIT - Yes, the NA cars have them too. When you are at full throttle, there is minimal vacuum, so this will hold a reserve if you wanted to mess with the controls while on the gas.

IIRC, all 944 series cars have vacuum solenoids that operate the flaps for the climate control system. Pop your head down on the drivers side and take a look see. The clip that always busts should attach to a rod coming out of a vac solenoid.
The line that goes into the cabin should run to the AC box, and branch off to the solenoids. There should also be 1 or 2 up by the blower.

Well, the green canister connects back to the brake booster. The brake booster connects back to the rest of the vacuum system, so ultimately it connects to everything. Are you missing yours?

I don't know what or if the vacuum is needed for the vents in the car but I know it controls the heater valve which defaults to open allowing hot water to flow through the heater core. So since our cars have a fan that always run it will be blowing hot air all the time.

On the early cars, the heater control valve is controlled by a cable. So it won't be affected by the loss of vacuum. I think that perhaps these vacuum operated vents are only for the A/C, which doesn't matter to me as I just deleted mine!
I ended up getting a bunch of vacuum lines from Autozone and replacing everything that was broken. (I broken some other lines too.) Thanks everybody.

You may not need AC in Jersey, but you will want defrost at some point. That flap is engaged by a vacuum assist solenoid. As long as you replaced all the lines in the stock manner, don't worry about it.
