[quote]here is a link to that article (I don't think it is working anymore, but if it is just temporarily down, you will be able to try it later): http://www.nutsandvolts.com/rx7/articles/93_cd_comparo/article_p1.asp

Hey, that article is missing the last two pages, 'Track Results' and 'Specicifications Table'. Anyone have scans of those pages from the actual magazine article?

I want to know what the "huge margin of victory in lap times at Willow Springs" was for the Supra vs. the others.

Magazine articles always give the 944 series a bad rap for interior layout and gauges saying there are levers and ***** all over the place- it's amazing to me that anyone could think they have more complicated layouts than the other cars shown in that test, and while most of them still look nice anyway (IMO), the Vette has to have one of the ugliest interiors avaiable! At any rate, one of the best parts of the 951, IMO, is it's interior, which I think is fairly well thought out. If nothing else, it's attractive and tasteful- it's one of the main reasons why I haven't gotten rid of my car actually. Sure, the mirror control switch set-up is kind of funny, and the hidden trip-meter reset button is quirky, but I think that kind of gives it more character. The only parts I actually dislike are the seats (except for the 10 to 12-way elec adj sport seats- those are cool) and the door panels & pockets. Of course, 968 panels, pockets, and speakers can easily be obtained and I'm just waiting to get a little more $$$ together for some Momo Street Racer seats.

I wonder which 968 they actually tested in that article- there were three different ones pictured, and the blue one that they took the interior pics of had normal 944 door panels, pockets, and 4x6 speakers- I've NEVER seen a 968 w/ANY of those. It did have the 3-spoke wheel though, so I assume it was a CS- I'm not a 968 guru though. Actually, there were several things about the interior of that 968 that I didn't understand...

That really wasn't a very good article IMO, and was poorly written and edited. I would REALLY like to see that stat page as well as the track times- I know the 951 ran Willow Springs in the 1:45 range, whereas the Turbo S ran it in the 1:41 and the '89 911 Turbo was ~1:43, and the best I've seen for a production car was a Viper GTS at ~1:33- 1:34- I have a bunch of listings for Willow springs, and would like to compare just out of curiosity...

I ran 1:38 laps at Willow Springs last summer. A guy in a stock Z06 ran 1:28-29 a couple of months ago. Chris Cervelli of Tecnodyne did 1:24s in their 951.

Impressive! I believe Cervelli's 1:24 is the record for a 951 isn't it? As far as I know, the overall record was set by a motorcycle in the 1:09 range- is that right? I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find out. I've got an article from C&D, I believe, that compares about 5 different cars there: V-Tech Integra, SVT Contour, Audi A4 1.8 (Quattro?), Talon Turbo AWD, Jetta VR6, and maye one other(?). They fell in the 1:45 - 1:47 range I believe...

The article w/the 968 had several inconsistencies, including a listed curb weight of 3180lbs and a weight dist of ~48/52. I've seen listings for 951's and such at 50/50 and even the NA's at 49/51, but as others (including you Danno) have shown, the 951 is really closer to 51/49 or 52/48- I assume a 968 would be VERY similar.

As for running WS at 1:38- what type of mods did you have (if any)? R&T 1987 Road Test Annual ran a 944NA against a 2nd gen RX-7 GXL at WS- the 944 ran 1:48.9 and the GXL: 1:50.2. They tested them again later, w/a different GXL- the Mazda was very twitchy and exhibited rear brake lock-up in some of the turns, so they called Mazda w/out disclosing lap times and were sent another GXL w/out the rear jump seats(?) that was supposedly tuned better- it felt very similar, but what was interesting, is that they tested the EXACT same 944, and it had been driven hard in the meantime, w/almost 2000 extra test miles on it- this was two weeks later. The GXL: 1:49.7 & the 944: 1:46.2. The same 944 had run the same course- a full 2.7 seconds faster...
