Question 968 engine + gearbox in 944S2

Has anyone here put a 968 engine and gearbox in a 944. I´ve got a S2 and is planning to upgrade it and a crashed 968 just knocked on my door...

Strange how these cars grow on you, I´ve been trying to sell it for a while but keep upgrading it instead and when someone shows interest in buying it I set the price to high...

Maybe 944-owners simply value their cars more than the buyers...

/A

I have heard of 968 gearboxes in 944 turbo race cars ... only problem is the the speedo does not work.

I guess it can be done. The biggest issue will be all the wiring. Steal as much from the 968 as possible.

Also expect it to take a while. You may also want to use the remains of the 968 suspension ...
Sounds a long, but fun project.

/A... do a search of the archives under the user name "Roberto"... he had his mechanic do a 968 into a 944 (na, IIRC) sometime in the past year. Making the speedo work seems to be one of the larger issues.

If you have room to park the wrecked 968, get the whole car & keep it until the project is finished; you'll no doubt discover things you need as you go along. And you can recoup some of your cash outlay by parting out what's left of the 968 and the stuff that comes off the S2.

Sounds like a great project; I'm still planning to do something similar (968 into a 944 na) after I retire in a couple of years.

Sounds cool, except for that short 968 gearing- I just don't like it- it's not THAT bad, but, 6th is shorter in the 968 than 5th is in a 951- the S2 has a slightly shorter 5th than a turbo I THINK, so it might be about even w/the 968- S2 5th = 968 6th. Anyway, the speedo is the biggest issue, but I've read that some have been able to make it work- I've never actually seen it though. Anyway, like Jim said- KEEP the whole car until you're done- you might also get some other cool stuff off the 968- for instance-

*door handles
*mirrors
*speakers
*rear spoiler (some people like it better)
*door panels/pockets (for SOME reason, SOME of the 968's had the Turbo S panels- the 968 ones were much nicer IMO- I have them on my turbo S, you can usually find them for under $500 used)

If it had M030 then:
*suspension components- shocks, springs, t-bars, & helpers, plus sways...
*17" wheels (I THINK ALL M030's had teh 17's AND LSD, but I'm not SURE)
*you MIGHT be able to put the rear bumper/whole rear end of the 968 on the 944, but am not sure- most people prefer it to the 944- I'm really 50/50 on the issue
*you MIGHT be able to put the front end of the 968 on too, but that might be harder- most people like the 944 front better- I'm really 50/50 on the issue

These last few things may not be able to be done at all though- MIGHT be the wrong color too- I just mention them b/c I'm bored, and that's the kind of stuff I daydream about nowdays...

You could really have a killer hybrid car there w/both of those to play with- doesn't matter HOW you switch the ends, etc (IF you did)- you'd have a beautiful car no matter what...

Oh, and BTW- I really want a 968 trans, and have found that Powerhaus II will sell custom gears for $300ea- I want to do 3-6, so $1200 total. SOME of the stock S2 gears may work too, saving some $, OR, you may just want to change 5th & 6th(?). I'm even thinking about trying to use 5th as 4th in the 968, so I could save $300 there- not sure if it can be done that way though- I need to find out more- also, I have no idea how much it would cost you for gears where you are- sorry for the book, but it sounds like a fun project...

hate to be the only pesimist in the bunch but..........why not JUST get the gearbox, you are going to be paying an awful lot of money and going through a lot of trouble to get 28 hp more.....

The easy way to get the speedo to work for a 968 tranny swap is to also use the ABS unit from the 968. This is where the speed signal comes from on the 968. Not a cheep thing to have done, but if you can do it yourself...
I have also heard of some people modifing a 951 ABS unit to get a speed signal out of it, but have never seen it.
Hope this helps

Yea, someone on the mail list did this. I think he described how to do it aswell. You may want to search through the mail archives.

Robby, at some point during the 93 to 94 production run the seats and door panels were changed from 944 type to 993 type. You can tell by curved stiching on the seats rather than straight across stiching like on 944's. This was done on a rolling basis. Other items that were changed on the 968 were different exhaust tips (earlier are nicer), underhood trim panels (earlier cars had a glove cubby), AC refidgerant type, wheels, etc. All of these changes were done, I guess, when supplies ran out and they just changed over at that time. Very early cars had a flush crest on the hood, and different badge numbers on the back deck.
