Default 1984 944 Engine suddenly stopped - No spark

Hi

My engine stopped apx. 10 seconds after I started it after a head gasket change. I have tested for spark, and it is not present. Does any one have an idea what could cause this, sees strange that the engine stops after a while, I would have thought it would not start at all if there was something wrong with the electricity...

Hope anyone can help

Here is a link to a video when it started and then died... have not been able to start it at all after this, the engine is cranking, but no spark

Hello Ole, Check out the link below for a no start condition. You might check the ignition switch module forward of the key. The plastic cracks and you lose ignition.

And in my limited experience of this engine stopping cold turkey:

Check the coil connections.

Verify that the cam is turning... In case the belt snapped or slipped off the tensioner or something...

Speed and reference connections would also be a good place to look. Also DME relay.

Check rotor inside the distributor too.

^^That's a great suggestion, and something that is easily missed.

Ask me how I know.

if no spark or fuel my guess would be the DME relay.

When you first switch the ignition on the ECU powers the fuel pump for approx 1 second to ensure sufficient fuel pressure to start. Thats probably why the car started and ran for a few seconds.

I would remove the DME relay and fit a 3x way jumper as per Clarks garage faqs and see if the car runs then. The jumper will bypass the crank sensor and DME relay and ECU and should power your injectors and fuel pump. If it runs you probably need a new DME relay

I saw the post the very night it was first posted. Its an excellent primer checklist but it needs some re-organisation, simplification and some further clarity .
A lot of stages could be eliminated for an initial check of the basics

Thank you for your answers everyone I finally found the error. Behind the fuse box there are two contacts with 6-pins, and I have mixed them up. When I connected them so that the colors matched, the car started I can not remember to have disconnected the contacts, so I only assumed they were ok, my bad.

However, now the car stopped again :S The spark is present and the injectors are spraying fuel, however the engine does not fire. Do I have to go through the list of possible errors, or does anybody know what could cause this? To me it seems that it might have something to do with air-supply? The car stopped while I was driving, felt like it was running out of fuel.

Looking forward to hearing from you (again)

if you have fuel on all the spark plugs and a healthy spark to each plug I fail to see how it couldn't fire up

I found the fault today, it was the small bolt holding the rotor in place which had removed itself, new bolt back in place and volá

Happy now

Thanks for helping me

excellent well done. I have heard this is surprisingly common but it is so obscure no-one thinks of it.
Thanks for posting the fix .
