Post I did it! The waterpump tbelt, balance belt etc...

Yes! It looks like everything went back together just fine. I started it up this evening bled the coolant and ps pump juice, no leaks so far! I noticed a bit of belt whine but it started to go away after a bit. Thanks for everyone's help, especially the Toolmaster who put up with numerous phone calls.

Happy car driving and stuff.

Yo Type_LT

Great! I always tip my hat to one of our number who slays their personal mechanical demons.

Cheers,

Belt whine means it's too tight.

SoCal: yeah I thats what I heard, after a few minutues of running it wen't away though. I checked about 12 times for "4" on the tension tool, so i'm pretty sure it's ok.

Don't forget to re-tension the belts after 1,500 miles. I know of a couple of people who had T-belt failure about 2,500 miles after installing a new belt.

Was it easier than you thought it would be?

I set my balance shaft belt at "3" with the 9201, and still have a very slight whine when cold, lasts about 1 minute. The timing belt is fine due to the automatic tensioner. I've reset the tension on the BS twice now. Still does it.

Bones: Could it have something to do with the new belt width? The new one is 18mm where the old one was 15mm, or maybe it's the difference between plastic and the metal tensioners? Just some thoughts....

Tabor: Yeah I'm pretty paranoid about it breaking, do you think that failure you are speaking of was because the belt wasn't tensioned to 4 when it was installed new?

Hi Im about to do the same thing did you use a step by step tutorial that you got from somewhere or is the haynes manual good enough Im a little afraid to do this but I drive about 45000 km a year and it will get a little expensive to pay someone to do this maintance.

hey...

bump for nekko's question. I am to going to attempt this maintanence asap and need the best available step by step info, all I have is the haynes manual now. Im not incompetitant, I just dont like how vague Haynes is, ie: "remove the starter" ...well, how do I remove the starter!!!

note: plausable but fake question, ill have to figure out how to remove it when I replace mr. master cylinder next week ;-)

thanks..

It's not so hard a job as it is meticulous. You need to be precise when installing the belts, keeping all your timing marks lined up, and then the tensioning and gapping the balance shaft roller. Adding the extra labor of the seals and such does make it a bit harder, and requires a few more tools.

nikko: there are many good instruction right here on the board, if you search for tbelt, waterpump, belt change, etc... you'll find plenty of resources. I used a combination of the factory manuals, rennlist and some online sources which are:

<a href="http://boerger.golden-tech.com/images/tbelts.html" target="_blank">Good belt change site</a>

<a href="http://boerger.golden-tech.com/images/wtrpump.html" target="_blank">Waterpump replacement</a>

I really didn't use haynes at all, it was too vague.

I just retensioned my belts as well -- initial at 4 rechecked the tension with 2K on it and it was 2. I would like to personally kick Gunter (or whoever it was that put such a steep slope on the tesioning cam) in the nuts for making the adjusting cam SO sensitive. retensioned to 2.6 (s/b 2.7 +- .3) so I'm off and running as well.

Your whining may not be comming from the timing belt but the balance shaft belt. But as you've noticed the whining may stop after 2-300 miles -- if it does OK, if not, then it's too tight.

I, and a couple of other intellegent people like me, think that using the 9201 on the balance shaft belt is bogus (due to the thickness difference of the two belts). I swear the belt will be WAAAYYY TOOO loose if the gage is used. This can cause premature beak-ulation. Realizing this, we adjusted the timing belt with the 9201 but the balance shaft belt by feel. We 'felt' it too tight the first go-round and retensioned it when we did the timeing belt. The new method (we used) for the balance shaft belt only is the 90 degree method. Tension the belt just until you can just turn the belt 90 degrees. Seems snug enough and it now doesn't whine.

BTW turning the engine over, over and over (because of damn Gunter) is MUCH easier to do with the plugs out. This is a good time to check, inspect, and maybe replace the plugs (I use NGK -- the only Jap thing on my car, but what can I say they make good plugs!). Also note that it is MUCH harder to retension the belts with the alt and power steering belts on, pan on, and lower half of the timing/balance belt cover still on -- I'm not sure I saved any time by not removing those items for the retension.

I will give anyone on this board a free burger if they can successfuly show me how to use the 9201 on the balance shaft and not have the thing loose as a goose! (You have to come to Ft. Worth to collect!)
