Sorry to resurrect and old thread, but do you actually remove the rear plug and then apply the RTV, or just clean around it really well and make sort of like a "weld bead" around the perimeter to seal it? I'm trying to fix an oil leak coming from the super loose rear plug on my lower balance shaft without having to rip the motor apart.

Thanks.

Just clean around it and seal the interface between the aluminium plug and the balance shaft cover. The plug won't come out unless you remove the balance shaft cover.

Nope it won't come out without pulling the cover. Clean it really good, and coat the entire end plug with RTV (or just the edges like you said). Use the grey so it blends in.
