Default old gaskets/sealant

trying to clean the old stuff off the block right now

what a PITA

used acetone, and all it seems to do is just clean the dirt off

tried to use a scraper and a small blade, and I got some remains of the old gasket off, but there is this orange stuff (looks like silicone) that was used as sealant I guess, and it doesn't come off, and I can definitely feel it when I run my finger/nails on it

anything stronger I could use?

thx

seems like slowly scraping it away is the key

this isn't on the headgasket btw, but every other gasket (intake, waterpump, etc etc) - has this stuff on it, even if I got it clean to where a razor blade won't pick it up, I still see red/orange residue on the metal, but at least it appears to be smooth

Scotchbrite can help remove those last stubborn bits that are too thin for a razor. Just be sure to block off any areas where you don't want scotchbrite dust (i.e., intake, oil passages, etc.).

I was going to try some gasoline and/or kerosine and see maybe they are a bit stronger then the acetone that I have

wire brush and a drill? lol ...

I wouldn't use a brush on a drill - that might take too much of the mounting surface off.

But you can use scotchbrite or steel wool by hand.

cool

so I just plug the openings and scrub away?

how about simply flushing the system afterwards with water or something?

btw, wire brush was a joke, lol ... but dammit, its so tempting
