I would also like to know which wheel you were talking about for 84 944.
I have -86 and I tried 17" wheels and did not like them because of extra weight and maybe a bit bigger radius. I felt it when accelerating, a tad slwower, lost some peppiness.

Also, the problem with the super light weight wheels is they are super big $$$...to me anyway.

I'm not about to spend $1400 on a set of wheels.

No need to spend $1400 on a set of wheels. Buy a set of Boxster or Carrera take-offs from the dealer or ebay with rubber for $700-900. Those rims area generally about 19-20#. Finish off the meats that are on the rims and then mount whatever you want. They'll usually come with P-zero's, Contisports or some other 993 or 996 approved rubber so it's not like you have to make due with sub par rubber either.
