944 turbo 220 or 250hp

944 turbo 220 or 250hp
I've been looking for a while for a descent 944 turbo, most have been rough 250hp 1990s , nice and fastbut cant find a straight one. I've come across an '87 220hp model however that seems original but i am concerned about performance, you dont get the kick up the **** that you get with the 250hp model. Does anyone know how easy it is to get the 220hp model up to high 200 horses? Also any issues between the two and what do you all think about differences in value between a 250 and a 220?

I have an 88 Turbo S. The 250 hp type you say.
The car not only has more hp, but bigger brakes and sligthly stiffer suspension.
However if I am looking for a turbo either will work unless I REALLY REALLY want a Turbo S. My S is stock I picked up about 13 years ago. It has plenty of power and performance for the street.
I got it because it turned up and was a good car.
You can easly make 220hp Turbo in 270hp car just by changing the chips. Chip vendors have come and gone over the years, but the latest ones see pretty good and reliable. Cost is probably $400 USD or less. My advice is unless you really want a Turbo S, get which ever Turbo you can find in good shape for the right price. It will be more important to get a good car vs 220 or 250hp version.
Actual differnces
k26/8 inplace of K26/6 . Larger hot side means better boost at higher rpm. Also peak torque at more RPM
DME & KLR mods to match the turbo
MO30 "sport suspension"
"S" front coil springs with ride adjustable front perches
26.5 mm front sway bar (thicker than regular)
18mm (later 16mm) rear sway bar Again thicker than normal
Stiffer rubber bushings
928 S4 brakes in front. - These are much larger calipers, thicker rotors with directional venting (ie left and right are different)
16x7 and 16x9 Forged wheels - Known as club sports (CS) Look similar to Design 90's, but these are forged not cast
225/50 R16 and 245/45 R16 Tire size whic is larger than standard
Rolled fenders front & rear for tire clearnace (not really needed, but the factory did it anyway)
Standard LSD unit in gearbox and tranny cooler
1st and 2nd gears are hardened
Also some very often over looked chassis stiffners up front. These are small triangle shape metal plates welted to the strut tow to the forward frame rail. These infact are what causes these cars to use a slightly different hose configuration to the expansion tank.
My car also had the 10 speak stereo. I am not sure if this was standard or optional in all markets. I also am one of the lucky ones with factory sport seats. It seems these were not common on the Turbo S cars. Not sure why.

for compairson. My Turbo S made 230 hp stock on the dyno. So this where one chip instantly makes 220 hp faster than a 250 hp Turbo S. Of course a chip in my turbo will put me well above 260 hp.
So there in lies the delema.. Once you swap go a do a turbo change however the only difference in cars is the brakes.. The suspension is easily upgraded to better than 944 turbo S level simply by going 968 M030 or completetly aftermarket.

Thanks guys, loads of good info. Based on that I went ahead a put a deposit on a 1987 turbo subject to an inspection on Wednesday. Seems a shame to mess around with it as it is a 70k miler with the best history i have seen, looks all original with only one owner from new! I'll post some pictures later in the week. In the mean time if I upgrade the turbo to say the turbo S blower do I need to do any other engine work?

In the mean time if I upgrade the turbo to say the turbo S blower do I need to do any other engine work?
