Steering system 101 please?

Steering system 101 please?
Hey fellow do-it-yourselfers... I'm in need of a little intro class on steering terminology. I hear rack and pump, and my Haynes isn't very helpful in this area.
My car has developed a serious leak (gush as I saw in another post) when steering wheel is turned lock to lock. When it hits one lock, it gushes from the rubber boot.
Can you guys help me understand what the parts are in the steering system? Like what are the two boots part of, is that the rack? Then I can re-search the posts (like I try and do first everytime) and understand the problem better.
Thanks ... and hopefully my next new post I'll be a fellow member!

I would check the Power steering pump return line, it is a common, failure. If this is the problem, you need to make sure that all the power steering fluid is removed from the motor mount, in time it will cause the rubber to soften, then they fail.

There WILL be a quiz. This is the rack, the boots are not shown but go at either end and are just rubber accordian shaped covers that seal out dirt - roughly the size of your wrist. The supply line is shown in the foreground and the smaller black tubing at the top is the return line. The supply line attaches directly to the pump (also not shown). The rack is attached to the crossmember, which also supports the engine via two motor mounts. Ok, thats it for today ...Bruce

If it's gushing out of the boot you need a new (or rebuilt rack). I've seen prices from $250 to $500.
Or check with Travis at www.rennbay.com he sells a re-seal kit.

Great guys, thanks for your info. And Bruce, thanks for that pic! It says alot. I've seen the rack before, but they pic you posted has it 'in place', and looks familiar.
I noticed when my daughter turned the steering wheel to one lock, it gushed on that side. Then the other. So it sounds like a rack rebuild kit? So if the rack needs rebuilt, that $70 kit from Rennbay should do it?
So if I've rebuilt my clutch master and slave cylinders, I should be able to do this??
TIA
Goody

ps... sorry I lost touch on your last email, somebody started a war.

Thats the link to the installation instructions for the seal kit. If there is anything that does not answer , I am just an email away.

It's tough on nice days - drive the 944 without the sunroof out or ride the bike. Life is rough... And I really see how rough when my timing is off and they're both in the garage broken down! Both are driveable these days, so crossin' my fingers...
Understand you're busy these days, I'll shoot you an email again soon.
Looks like the rebuild is not alot more than taking it all apart, cleaning it up, and replacing all the seals.
Thanks Travis, it's all starting to make sense now (pics always help). Now gotta do that soon, tired of seeing an 'arc' of fluid on my blacktop!
