No cat. I would need to borrow one, because mine is gutted. If I can get anymore good ideas on how to improve, I will try again. I will try a little more, since I don't want to do the work to put the cat on and then take it off.

I'm suprised that the HC didn't come down. But we got NOX in-line, so that is a step in the right direction...

Maybe it is time to update your chip. I can easily burn a selectable "emissions map", to only be used for emissions testing. Plus I have some other goodies/updates. Don't adjust the AFM. Give me a call when you can.

You're probably too lean now. Richen it up, get a cat on it and you'll most likely be good...

No - not with HC that high.

I'm sure he would pass as-is with a cat...
He is spiking rich during throttle transitions - this is because the DME immediately goes off of the fuel map values (and acceleration enrichment values), then starts taking out fuel via O2 sensor feedback (which is why your fine on idle & cruise).

Hey guys, I am moving to Longmont this summer from Orlando. We don't have emissions testing here (or snow!) and you're making me nervous about my 83' N/A 944 passing inspection. It is completely stock and runs great. Should I be worried?

Pops don't worry too much about the emissions if it is stock. Mine is mostly stock and would pass if I had a cat. I passed last time without a cat. Even though the standards are tougher now, I'm still willing to put in a fair amount of effort to get it to work without a cat. If in the end I can't get it to pass, I will borrow Doc's cat, but at least it will probably running better then.
As far as the snow goes, I personaly wouldn't use it as a daily driver in the winter. If it is your only car, get snow tires for it (I now people who have done this), or buy a beater to drive on snow days (this would be my choice).

It seams weird calling you Rogue & Doc, but since you are both Josh, I will stick with it. Doc it may come down to borrowing your cat, but to me it is kind of a fun challenge to see if it can be done without it. Plus if Rogue and I can get it to pass, it might be very usefull for others here too.

Sounds good. May be less work putting the cat on tho...

Sidenote: You're selling the car?

I used to get my 91 GLI to pass with a gutted cat, p&p head just by adjusting the air flow plate screw. Unfortunately we do not have that on the 944.

I talked with Rogue last night and he is going to make a new chip with a new map designed just to pass emissions. If this doesn't make it pass or get it close, nothing but a cat will. We are pretty confident that it is possible to make a big improvement in the HCs.

Great! Looking forward to seeing what it does. Mine failed miserably today, so we're going to get the rest of the kit installed (map sensor, boost solenoid, SMT6, wideband) and go from there...

FWIW mine passed last year with just the addition of a new cat.

The rest of the mods are as follows.

-Huntley chips,
-MBC at about 16psi
-Open air filter
-TIAL 38mm waste gate.
-Magnaflow exhaust
-PP, o-ringed head.
-unknown (probably stock) turbo.
-Lindsey wires, hoses.
-and had old oil in it.
