944 Cam Belt
I'm changing my cam belt at the moment, and I'm having big problems.
I got he old belt off (genuine Porsche item) and tried to get my new one on. It won't fit.Am I missing anything? My new part was not a "genuine" porsche item and would'nt fit. When I compared it to the old one, it was slightly too short.
So I bought a Genuine porsche item. Its exactly the same as the one I took off. Yet it won't fit.
What am I doing wrong? Is there a special "trick" I need to do???
I don't want to force it on, but it just seems too short (by about 5mm).
Any ideas greatly apprecitaed

Yup, loosen the tensioner...Your old belt has stretched and the new one won't fit until you "give it a little room"...Your belt will need to be properly tensioned too...Good Luck!

Will,
New belts will always be a tight fit and you have to partially engage the belt on the sprocket teeth for the cam and then turn the crankshaft to "feed" the belt onto the camshaft sprocket. It will slip onto the cam sprocket when the crankshaft sprocket is turned. This assumes that you have loosened the automatic tensioner as much as possible. You only want to do this when you're at TDC for #1 cylinder and sure that all the marks are aligned correctly.
After getting the belt on, put it back to TDC and check to see if all the marks are as they should be. If so, then turn the crankshaft 2 full turns clockwise. For every 2 crankshaft turns, the camshaft rotates 1 turn.
I usually rotate the crankshaft 4 or 6 times just to be sure.
Hope this helps.
