Thumbs up

Tabo,

Way to go! I think I will be going the same route this winter, my wallet hasn't worked up the courage yet to call John, but it's coming soon.

One thing: For your car to be truly "well-balanced", I seriously recommend a little suspension and brake upgrade work. It's not that N/A brakes are bad, it's the fact that with all of that extra power you will find yourself exceeding the limits that they were really intended for. Especially if you are going to do DE's or AutoX. At the very least, do the easy swap to 951 brakes.

Once you get all that sorted out and the engine finished, you'll never want to part with that car!

Best of luck!

Tifo

I loved my NA until I drove a turbo. I kept telling myself that the NA was a fun car and that it didn't need more power, the truth is it did, badly. I wouldn't turn down a 220 rw hp NA 944 mind you but that's a far cry from a stock one. BTW, driving around boost is no problem at all, once the car's going fast enough to be @ or above 3000rpm in first gear, you really don't have to worry about it...

Cool

Its funny how loyal people can get to one type of car or should I say motor V/S another. I have no qualms with either. Both have qualities that are desirable and I WILL own a turbo here some day in the near future. But that’s just me. Right now I am partial to getting my N/A up to snuff. And YES there is something to be said for a naturally aspirated motor that are built with thought and good design. Pushing the envelope to this degree puts my N/A in an all together separate category from other N/A’s and will allow me to give turbo’s a serious run for the money on short tracks such as auto cross. DE’s are another story. My hope is that the higher RPM that will be available will allow me to reach speeds to match the turbo’s in the stretch. I believe I will have a couple of advantages that I intend to take full advantage of. With the lightened crank and fly wheel I will have the power and torque coming in to and more importantly out of corners taking full advantage of the apex. Where as in this case turbo’s are know to suffer from lag coming out of the corners due to the spin up limitation on even the best turbo’s chipped or not. The higher RPM that will be available will also give me the advantage in this area do to the ability for the car to run up through the gears faster and in turn getting out there ahead as much as possible before the next cornering maneuver. Lets face it here we are not driving nascar circles and the twisties are what these cars are all about. I completely expect to be beat buy built turbo’s there’s no question or augment from my end about this. There is defiantly something to be said for 300BHP but the bottom line here is that they meaning my car and the built turbo’s are going to be two completely different cars that happen to handle similarly. And well we all are looking for an advantage out on the track. We all live on this small planet and we all seem to have various opinions as to who’s the best. Lets get out there and have some fun with this and whoever crosses the Finnish line ahead of the next guy/girl, More power to them, I will gladly shake the winners hand “Even if its my own” LOL .

As for Turbo Lag in 944 Turbo S

There is not really alot of Lag. The problem is this.

There is NO POWER under 3,000 rpm

Since most plesant docile street driving takes place below 3,000 Turbo cars seem sluggish. Once you cross 3,000 things change dramaticly and the cars are hoot.

Exit any corner at 3500 rpm and you will forget about turbo lag. If doing spirited driving just never drop below 3000 rpm! That is what the gear shift lever is for!

Not sure where the power will be in Tabo's big NA motor.
I would love to see the dyno charts.. Not to compare peak power, but WHERE the power is!

Wow, that motor is going to be a screamer. Good for you Tabo. Looks like you've done a ton of work to your car. Kudos to you for the original
front end work. I like it. I wouldn't say that the N/A is better than the Turbo, just a different animal all together. I agree with the notion that the turbo is sluggish under 3k RPM, that's to be expected with the difference in compression ratio . When I first got my 951 I kept the N/A for a few months before it was sold. Both cars have their merits. The N/A is quicker off the line and steering felt lighter, handling snappier. The turbo feels like a tank, very solid and planted. When the boost comes on the difference in torque is simply unmistakeable. In traffic i'd take an N/A over the turbo, although the turbo
does fine, the N/A likes stop-and-go better. Suspension and brakes are obviously superior on the turbo, but that can be dealt with on the N/A.
Aesthetically IMO the Turbo just looks more finished. That said I prefer the 951 over the N/A, but i'd be lying if I said I didn't miss my old '84. As the old adage goes..."the grass isn't always greener".

Tabo and I have agreed on the final headwork...its awsome!

This is the deal We will get 41% flow over stock with the work.

Custom oversized lightweight SS valves.
Titanium retainers.
Chromoly Keepers
Custom High strength Valve springs (not ferrea)
Extensive work in the combustion chambers
5 angle valve grind with a slight back cut
Custom Guides
Porting and matching of both the exhaust and intake.

Its not cheap, but its the fullest extent that we can bring the head. It will rev freely at 7500 rpm all day long :-)

So, thats the final design. Vroom Vroom Vroom :-)

We will post pictures of this, and all the work throughout the progress of the build.

Take Care

The project was put on 'indefinite' hold. I was over Keith's house with Alos a couple of weeks ago.
