Hood Light Switch

If you open the hood and put the blinker stalk in the position to signal right, the engine light will turn on even if the car is shut down and the lights are out.
You may need to push the bulb in and out a bit for it to make good contact, but it's designed to work this way.

Yes. It is a mercury switch.

Yep, mercury switch, but they are highly susceptible to corrosion. Might be good to remove the switch and harness and clean up the bracket itself. They have a little pin that goes thru a small hole on the hood, and this is where the grounding contact is made. If it's corroded, the light won't come on very well. Make sure it's good clean metal and give it a coat of dielectric grease. Also, makes sure the light socket is clean as well, use some sand paper, needle file, or Emory board to clean things up.

Hate to bring this one back from the dead, but is the lights Mercury switch in the light itself? I just spent an hour chaising my tail on this! Lol
In short, my 951 didn't have the bulb. I bought one but then couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work. Finally figured out you had to have the parking lights or right turn signal on. (I do find it interesting it didn't come on with the hazards however.... Really Porsche?? That makes more sense than the right signal!)
Anyway, I was pushing on the OBVIOUS switch, right in front of the fuse box. Tested it, took it apart, jumped it.. you name it. (Is that one just for the alarm????? All i can figure out) that switch did nothing. I tested with the hood closed, no light. WTH! How does it know???? I searched EVERYWHERE!!! Turns out, magic Germans!!! Mercury switch, who would have thunk????
So anyway, where that magic switch be???
And yeah, now that I think of it, since it's only powered with parking lights on, or right signal on, that second on has to be for the alarm!! Good to know if I ever install a aftermarket alarm.
That things I'd like a decoy!!! Two hood switches... Sneaky Germans!
