Default Belly pan replacement options.

I've been sans belly pan since I got the car, and I'm thinking of fabricating something basic to span from the radiator back to the aluminum sub-frame. In part it's to try to keep road crap off the belts and pulleys, but I've also heard that it helps the radiator to work by directing airflow.

Any thoughts on where I could either get a pan or if anyone has fabricated one?

Someone in the classifieds is selling a 951 that has some kind of custom belly pan that he explained, I would love to see pictures of it.

Just buy a used pan from a dismantler. The post 85.5 plastic ones come up on Ebay all the time. The early aluminum ones are harder because they get so banged up.

Default Belly Pan Pics

I've been asked about a hundred times about the pan mentioned in my sig. Well here it is.... and the car is for sale too! The pan is all aluminum with bead rolling for rigidity. The pan has a couple of slight bends to create negative pressure under the car to draw air out. It is fastened with Dzus fasteners permanently mounted to the underside of the car on the batwing and around the oil pan. Been running it for 5 years or so and I notice lower operating temps at speed on the highway with it on. Never taken data but it seems to do its job. The car doesn't have belt covers either so it is a little extra protection.

Cool custom pan! Why do you guys need drawings? Just lay under the car and make a template and put your fabricating skills to work.

Exactly what Marquito said.

I am planning on developing several custom parts over the next year, so I'll do the belly pans as well. I think they can be made for about $200 or so all said and done, which wouldn't be out of most people's reach. The hard part is installing the mounts. Mine are all aluminum bolted to the suspension hard points.

Glad you guys like it.

On a little sidebar, I took the aluminum belly pan off my wrecked '86 Turbo to install on the '86 Turbo I purchased from Rick Murphy in November and it won't fit! It rubs up against the control arms and the mounting tabs don't line up with the holes on the cross-member. My wrecked turbo was an early production Turbo while the latest was made some time later. Are there different belly pans? I may be interested in your custom solution for this reason as well.

Frustrating.

CB

Doh, never mind. The aluminum belly pan attaches to the plastic belly pan, not the cross member. A little bending got the shields to clear the control arms. It's all good now.
