There's no intercooler because we're running only a couple psi of boost and with the modified K26/8 turbo we're getting great efficiency at that boost level. Implementing an intercooler at such low boost would create a significant pressure drop, and we DON'T want to run more boost with the 11:1 pistons. Obviously the K26 turbos are watercooled, and the exhaust is all stock 951. A 3.5 lb spring in the wastegate is controlling boost and the bypass valve is located next to the intake piping.

This project has met the goals we set ou to achieve. Trevor and I both wanted to keep the car, and motor as stock as possible.

No after market electronic fuel optimizers, no gauges all over the dash, must keep the stock plastic under the hood, and should be able to convert back to stock.

It really is a nice conversion. Clean, gives good power, although we have not dynoed the car yet, Trevor has told me about the fifth gear acceleration, and we did get the tires to break loose from a cruise in first gear.

The car drives and idles just as it did stock. We are controlling the boost with a 3lb spring in the wastegate (which should compensate for any boost spike, giving us a max boost on hard pedal of about 4.5psi). The blowoff valve is a stock valve, and the turbo is watercooled. We kept the variocam, air conditioning and as you can see all the under hood dressings. THe stock airbox is not moved, and the entire stock elctronics/fuel and ignition are in place as well.

So far Trevor has had no detonation, and from what he has told me, he got on it pretty good after he drove the 600 miles home to break in the turbo.

Off to the dyno :-)

Super-clean installation! That U-shaped tube from the turbo to the intake manifold is fit for display at the Guggenheim. Congrats on a really factory-look job!

That's a very professional looking installation, and a great idea to utilse/retain so much of the stock equipment under the hood. Congratulations and good luck with the fine tuning.

Congratulations to Trevor, bravo to John & all involved in teh fab & install! Looks great!

Of course, after the dyno results are posted, we'll need to see a price for a DIY kit... including a factory script 'turbo' decal .

Jim, Yowzah, yowzah, yowzah!!!

Thumbs up

Very nice indeed.

How much boost are you running and what is your target output (HP and TQ). I know you're going to the dyno soon but what is expected?

Yeah, and I didn't farm the red fuel rail cover off for someone else to do...I did that all by hand.

SHAUN finished the intake manifold by hand at home, so big thanks to him too...he's gonna charge me $5.

I just took the car out again today and this thing is fast. I get full boost at 2500 RPM and boy is there some meaty torque! This motor didn't make much grunt before until 4100 RPM...

sounds like you got what you wanted..
question..are you going to leave it this way or use this as a stepping stone down the road?
ie..diff turbo, dedicated boost control, lowered compression, higher boost? just curious...looks very stealth

You don't need much in the way of boost pressure on my son's slightly modified '89 turbo to really get moving so even 4 psi on this setup should seem pretty nice. Unfortunatly, once you get used to that you'll probably want a lot more

HI all,

We are very proud of the conversion, it turned out as planned. A very simple conversion. Nothing doen to the ECU, or motor. Low boost good power.

As we have all seen and read countless times (on this and the 968.net list), Tim has worked with us on this job. I've always said, as before we started this project, even on the 968 list, that Tim richards would do the welding on the fab work. To put any fires out before they start, this conversion worked out exactly as planned. It was a coporative effort between three. Tim, Trevor and Myself. That has never and will not be a secret. Trevor and Myself wanted a kit that would be a certain way. Maybe we didn't agree with Tims concept at times, as Tim didn't think our ideas were right, but Trevor and I had a "look" we wanted and did not want to deviate from the plan.

Now, there seems to be a few on this list and the 968 list that want to start a little rumble on this topic...the topic being Tims involvement. Well, a little reading of the entire thread on the subject, found on this list and the 968.net list will show that there has been a greatly revealed list of all that would be involved.

So, Tim, I thank you, and again...a say in all honesty, that you are the person I would always turn to for any type of brainstorming on fabwork. I think your work is emaculate, and when you and I get together, we can achieve anything. So, let it be known by all, that Tim and I are close friends, talk daily, and bounce ideas around on a constant and ongoing basis. This will never change.

As for the Turbo Conversion, its a solid performer. IT meets all the goals for a low cost, moderate (60hp) power gain. Here is a list of what we wanted and achieved.

Keep the injection system stock.
Keep the ignition stock.
Keep the entire motor stock.
Have a very clean, and factory looking intake manifold.
Keep the under hood dressing stock.
Keep the AC.
Keep the Vario Cam.
Must be able to return to original quickly.
Keep the conversion low cost.
Give an honest power gain, no hype.
Be reliable.
Be easy on the eyes.

We got it all. And again, thanks to all involved that helped. THere are countless people who emailed Trevor and myself, who'd ideas we also paid attention to, the list would be too long to type, but thank you too :-)

Take Care!
