My car has been a daily driver for over 12 years. It had a tick over 102K when I bought it.
Don't really know how many miles are on it now because the odometer likes to take holidays.
But I keep up with the maintenance, and it has only stranded me a few times, mostly due to my fault.
Try and do that with some other cars. 12 years as a daily driver (it was 11 years old, and not very well loved when I bought it)

So, the answer seems to be: these cars will last as long as you fix the parts that break.

Perhaps a more useful thread (to the OP) would be to ask those that put between 5,000 and 15,000 miles on their car last year how much they spent on maintenance during that one year. Decide how you want them to account for upgrades (either include, or estimate the price of replacement only, or not include it).

Obviously, you'll get a range, but it might give you more useful information.

For many on this website (me included), we are not fixing the cars because it makes economic sense. We'd all be better off buying a Camry, in that case.

But, it sounds like the OP wants to know what it will cost to run one of these cars.

I am sure that 944s will be with us until the governments decide to ban the use of cars with only an internal combustion engine and force us to use hybrids or purely electric cars. Of course this will happen in many - many years (in 2040 maybe ). But then we are going to make electric conversions rather than LS1 ones!

10 years ago I saw a stock 83 with 440k miles all by the original owner.

One of my race motors had 140k on it before I started racing it. I race that motor with fresh head for 6 years. I took it apart and the bores were still perfect even with original rings.

Well in my first year i've spent about about 3k on the car, now keep in mind this is all because the car wasn't as well maintained as it could have been so i've done the following.

New Koni yellow struts/shocks (car had the originals)
New a-arms/bushings/balljoints (while i was there)
New Front rotors/Metal master pads/stainless steel brakelines (first thing i did)
Turbo sways F/R (upgrade, used, cheap!)
Oil cooler housing gasket and the mess that comes with it when it fails.
Timing belt/rollers/water pump (didn't know when it was done, good thing i did it old WP was nasty and the bearing was going)
Typical tune up stuff (plugs, cap/rotor)
New Coolant hoses all around (popped one, did the rest as it left me stranded and i didn't care to have that happen again)
Second set of phone dials with new winter tires on them for DD duty.
Next on the list : New drivers side CV axle with stage8 bolts all around (thanks ideola) my current one is clicking.

All in all i feel like i've had the typical first year experience with the car, especially since i use it as my DD. I feel like the next few years will be nicer to me since i've caught up a lot of the maintenance on the car, but i'm sure there will always be more I've been driving the hell out of it and think i did 10k or so since i got it, however i can't say exactly as i haven't gotten around to fixing the odometer yet lol

For a new owner-----2 to 3 weeks without a major repair..........
Get the repair bills and a PPI before you buy,

Thanks everyone for your input. I just want to make sure that with the proper maintenance done on the motor that I can get another 3 years or better out of the motor. In another thread, I saw an LSx swap, which will most likely be my plan once the factory motor runs out. I love the looks of the 944 (as well as Corvettes, hence the reason I have had 4 of them), but love the power of my LS3 Corvette (granted, it is now a 418 stroker, but even factory ran 12.26 in the quarter on street tires).

Uh, I think you're overlooking the point we've tried to make that if you keep up with the maintenance, the factory motor won't run out.

Wanting an LS conversion is a different matter entirely.

Oh, no. I understood that with maintenance the motor will run and run...which is great! But, if I can get the funds together in a couple of years, converting to an LSx motor would be great!!!

Then you should buy 944 turbo or S2 with better brakes and stronger transmission.

I picked up an 87 944 for $3200 today. Base model, as it will be my DD and my Corvette will be the weekend/race car. I pick it up on Monday. I can't wait to get it!
