Default Bad CV clunk ? OK in corners ... maybe transmission

I have what sounds like a bad CV joint (had them before), however it does not do it in corners.

Very intermittent
Only under load (clutch engaged w/ acceleration)
No noise at engine rev (clutch dis-engaged) and rolling

after stopping and parking, goes away sometimes.

Noise is a CLUNK sound
takes awhile to start when first driving, maybe exhaust heating up CV Joint ?

Anyway, hope it's not the tranny, I'm famous for grenading transmissions.
car: 86 Turbo

Thanks for any input
oh, anyone know the part# or name for the cheesehead socket @ autozone or pep boys ? on a budget and I don't have my set anymore. I've done the axles on my previous 944's before so thats the cheaper of the failures.

I had my axles rebuilt at Kragen (they send them out) for $65 per axle or something cheap like that. You need to supply cores, so it's not convenient if you don't have another driver. Cheaper than one CV, if one is bad.

Hi Don, Pep Boys carries a triple square set. It costs around $15 and comes with 4 bits in 6, 8, 10 and 12mm sizes. The required size for the CVs is the 8mm bit.

The brand is "Lisle" and the reference number for the set is 60750 "12 Point, Triple Square Metric Internal Wrench Bit Set."

These are actually bits and you'll need a 1/2 inch deepsocket to use them with your ratchet of preference.

They're not the best quality, but will do the job at least once.

Good luck with it!

Did you figure out what was causing this issue?

Dunno what the issue is but if the sound doesn't happen when cornering, chances are it isn't CV joints. Bad CV joints start with a clicking sound and progress from there. The way to ID them as the problem is by turning the car while driving. I think you have to keep looking for the problem. That's my .02 cents worth.
