Have any of you seen one of these?
I just saw this and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with it. LSD on ebay

Ugghhh... avoid the Phantom Grip like the plague !!! I had done some development testing for that unit and cannot recommend it. It is a retrotfit to the existing diff. and uses springs to push the planetary gears together. The extra friction between the gears is what causes the limited-slip action. So instead of friction-plates rubbing on each other like in the factory LSD, you've got your gears' teeth providing the friction. Not sure how long your tranny will last with that kind of mechanism.
For an explanation of how LSDs work (besides psychotic neural hallucinations), check out the articles on the Torsen diff on my 951 RacerX website. Then ask for comments from users who have actually installed and used the Quaiffe or Guard Transmission units on their car.
There are some mis-guided logic with lack of quantitative support from the conservative 911 crowd on the Torsen, but then again, the differential is NOT a suspension member and shouldn't be used as band-aid to an uncooperative rear-end under braking. If you've got a car that acts unruly under braking, you've got to ask yourself why you're hanging 60-percent of the car's weight behind the rear-axle to begin with. Anyone know Dr. Porsche's real reason for doing this in the 'People's Car'?
The role of the differential is just that, to allow drive wheels to rotate at different speeds coming out of corners and to split torque evenly between them. The Torsen unit operates the opposite way compared to a normal open-diff. in that it diverts more torque to the outside wheel that has more traction, rather than a standard diff. that adds power to the inside tire as it loses traction under cornering. Even friction-plate LSDs will do that once their pre-set spring-preload has been overcome; at which point, they are the same as an open-diff and spins the inside tire madly. The smooth and progressive torque-split from 50/50 to 20/80% to even 5/95% of the Torsen can't be matched by anything else. And it doesn't cause understeer coming out of corners. Those who've tried it, would never go back to anything else.

The Phantom Grip is just a vamped up thrust-race-plate, using the opposing friction to create a wanna be LSD. STAY AWAY. I have tested this unit in a FWD car........I have nothing good to say .....I have been using a quaiffe for 6-7 years NEVER had any problems or wear. The torsen style diff is the only way to go. Car stays balanced no matter what you are doing.
