Post soon to be 944 turbo owner with question

I have been looking for a 944 for a while now. I have just found an 86 turbo with 68k on it and just had an all new block put in it (this was a OEM crate motor)Reason for this was last owner somehow let oil get very low and toasted the motor.
Is a crate motor from porsche good? bad?
Im going to look at it next week and just wanted to get your thoughts and any ideas what to look for. It does have the orig. r12 for ac.

Is this a good idea to upgrade this? What all is involved and about what would cost be to do this.
If the ac works fine as is...is there any reasons to change it over?

Oh yeah.....this is my first time posting here. You guys seem great and hope to get to know many of you....Thanks

Welcome to the flock. I'll let the wrench heads answer your questions though (I'm still learning)!

I'd be leary of this. Reason - a Porsche crate motor would be VERY expensive. So much so that the cost of the motor would far exceed the value of the car. I could be wrong, but I think the guy is pulling your leg. Ask to see the receipt.

Lutz,

As the motor swapout was recent, ask for the receipt and call to check it out. I'm leaning with ICAT on this one. If anything seems fishy, walk away. There are alot of cars our there and you can and should be choosy.

Nothing seems fishy (at least yet) Its a porsche dealer and they are the ones that installed the new motor. They say they have all the paper work on car. I will find out when i look at it on tues.
The last owner that toasted the motor is the owner of the dealerships son. If all the paperwork looks good.....is a crate motor good or bad....other then the cost.
Whats your thoughts??

I hope dad made Junior pay for that motor... How embarasing is it to own a car dealership..a Porsche dealership at that and have your own son do something like that to a car...

It only makes sence if the kid ran it low on oil on purpose to get into another car....Don't ask me how I know this....

Yes this is the only part that i need a better understanding of...maybe i will get the full story when i look at it. I would not think a motor with 68k would be using or leacking that much oil

A crate motor from Porsche would be the best motor you could buy. We'd all like to have one sitting in our garage waiting!

If the rest of the car checks out, then this might be quite a find. But it still seems a bit to good to be true!?! Be careful.

Im being very careful....i know how shady a dealer can be.
Is there a way to match any numbers on the block to like the chassis number....even if the paper work looks good i would just like to know that it is a different block.

If it is a Porsche crate motor,I would think it has a warranty?Porsche motor,installed by Porsche dealership=warranty.If there is no warranty I would be skeptical.Good luck. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
