Exclamation Why is my car surging?

Replaced timing belt, coil and a failed refrence sensor on my 84 944 with 78000mi. Now AFTER WARMING UP @ IDLE my car drops down to around 500rpm shudders and then races back up to about 1750 rpm. It never dies and runs fine other than AT IDLE WARMED UP. It always does this and used to IDLE SMOOTLY at 750rpm like a watch. Please help its been to long of a winter and I'd love this car to be reliable all summer.

try unplugging the idle controller (under the intake). i worked on a car one time that did the same thing; unplugged the idler and it held a steady 900-1000rpm warm.
