Default $3000 for a 944S?

I took a look at a '87 944S today, it has a 191k on it. I'm torn on whether I should get it or not. It wasn't registered so I couldn't drive it very far but it seemed to be running fine.

The body is pretty rough. Someone backed into it around the driver door and front fender, and it has a dent on the driver side rear corner. The front bumper also looks a little pushed in and will probably need a new bumper shock. The paint is beat up and will probably need to be repainted.

The interior is ok, the driver seat has a few rips and the dash board is cracked.

It does have Konis all around, it's chipped, has a nice exhaust on it, 928 Rims and 4 piston calipers. The timing belt has about 15k on it, but the owner doesn't have any maintenance records. He did just have the master/slave cylinders and lines replaced.

It also has a decent stereo with subs.

Mechanically it seems fine but cosmetically it's pretty bad. I can't find many other 944's for sale locally to compare the price to.

Is it worth $3,000?

I will stay away from it & like carlege mention the cam tensionner is probably on it's last leg witch mean $$$ you'll have to spend rigth of the bat, by the time you finish fixing it you could get yourselve a very nice 944 NA witch will cost you a lot less to maintain & fixe if you have to.Telling use where your from will help since peoples here could guid you buying close to your place & when buying a Porsche first thing you need is a PPI "Pre Purshase inspection" it's a must & as much maintenance records as you can before putting your money down. I'll pass that one & keep looking there is many ,many good 944 out there for sale.

I'm in Connecticut.

I think I'm going to call the guy and tell him I'm going to pass. On the test drive the road was really bumpy and I couldn't take it over 30. I asked about a PPI and he said he would rather just re-list it and find someone else. It does have alot of miles and without records it leaves alot of unknowns.

You don't need to buy a 944 that hasn't been loved. There are plenty out there.
A "cheap" 944 will cost you more in the first year than to purchase a loved, more expensive one.
Unless your aim is to strip it to make a race car or parts car.

He bought the car in 06, never registered it. He put on about 3k on it. It just has so many little problems he didn't seem to notice, locks didn't work, wipers acting weird and it looked so much better in pictures. I tried to take some pictures of the paint damage and it didn't come out well, but it was really bad, it was under a tarp that gouged the paint.

That definitely is not a 3000 dollar car.

The only thing worse than a neglected 944 is a 944S. Run and don't look back. The "S" is a better engine than the regular 944, but not better enough to justify the risk that this car poses. Unless you're a great mechanic, that car will need $3-4,000 of work -- and that assumes that the clutch and other major mechanicals are kosher..

Won't let you get a PPI done huh? Well that sure made it easy, didn't it? Move on.

Where in CT is it?

It's in danbury, ct.

Now he says he could get some plates so I could take it for a drive. I'm going to pass on it.

I looked at a '84 944 with a much better body today. It needs paint but no real noticeable dents or anything. It just had a LSD and new transmission put in, new head gasket, timing & balance shaft belt, and water pump. But the clutch is original so don't know if that would be worthwhile.
