Don't be a soft foot Frankie. Drive it, rev it and enjoy it.
People who keep at 3k should just buy a diesel and shift 2.5k

and on the highway sometimes i cruise at 4krpm but too scared to cruise at higher rpms for long periods.

but i'm worried about my rod bearings failing after I my car lost oil pressure last year.
having replaced my own main and rod bearings 4 years ago, i am confident they will be ok...

my car idled with zero oil pressure for 5-10 minutes last year. so i'm worried the rod bearings may have worn out and the clearances may be larger. and the higher you rev the more likely you'll spin a bearing.

i like reving it higher though....I do it occasionally.

also if you are shifting at 5k rpm on every shift in the city wouldn't you get horrible fuel economy?

my fuel economy already sucks maybe because my 02 sensor is toast though.

lol reminds of an old bmw I bought from some lady last year and I was taking it for a test drive and reving it to 4k rpm and the lady was freaking out and thought I was going to blow up the engine because she shifts at around 2500 rpm.

also the 944 engine revs pretty slow..... its a big 4 cylinder engine and that make it rev pretty slow which kinda sucks.

My car seems to run better after being taken north of 4k a couple of times.

And since its an auto, it always cruises at about 4k on the highway (80mph)

i clear my engine out on friday night coming home from PA into NJ. i ease of the line but bring 1-4th up to 6k before shifting, does a world of difference, in idle smoothness and cleaning carbon out. big difference if i only do it once a month or so...then i'm good to play around with the other cars and keep pace in 4th at like 4k, until finally hitting 5th.

how's this though for a fear, oil light not on, but the gauge is messed up.

You'll never foul plugs on a 944 if the car is stock no matter how much you grandma the car. Peak power is at 5800. In first gear I'd be ok with revving it to redline, due to the gear ratio you are still accelerating well until redline. In 2nd I would shift a little sooner, maybe 6300. 3rd gear 6300, 4th gear 6100

what a stupid thing to recommend to someone to red-line their engine when you know nothing about the condition and age of the engine or how it has been driven previously.

whats the average age of a 944 driver these days ? 14?

hahah, peanut, your right it would be amiss to offer a suggestion to anyone that could jeopardize their equipment, we are always fully responsible for our own car, and its condition.

however, i run mine pretty hard as well. i redline it often enough, but thats why i bought a Porsche instead of a civic.

everything said, mine doesnt run right now because i broke something, running it hard...

That's how I drove my 944S - right up to the day it choked up a rod bearing

sorry to hear that but then I guess it was your decision to drive the car like you stole it lol
The op was asking for advice about recommended rpm so he will likely be influenced by others suggestions.

If an engine hasn't been driven hard for months/years its not wise to suddenly go and redline it and rev the nuts off it. A broken engine would probably write a car off

Well yea I'm influenced by posts, that why I started this topic. I probably won't rev over 6,000. Thats plenty high, considering all I do is drive back roads

Porsche included a red marker on the tach to tell you how high to rev it. If it was a bad idea to rev up to the redline, they would have had a lower redline!

That said, in extreme conditions (hot weather, track use) it's probably best to short shift. My local track (Summit POint) has two stretches where the car is right at the redline coming up to a curve. I've started short shifting because it gives me heartburn thinking about the #2 bearing.
