Post Powersteering...a question

Ever since having the mech do a bunch of work, including using special Porsche synthetic power steering fluid (he says its the only stuff to use and ATF = bad)...my power steering has had some "hard spots".

By that I mean I'll be turning the wheel, and all of a sudden it'll get harder to turn and make some noise...it usually happens in the same place, near lock. Does the system need to be bled??

Bleeding is accomplished by taking off the resevoir cap and cranking the wheel left to right, correct?

thanks,
Adrial

Yup that is the way you bleed it, it pretty much bleeds its self. Just loosen the cap so the air can escape.

Sorry I am not sure about your problem...

*ba bump*

Does it sound like I just need to bleed (I did it for a little...how long should it take?)? Or is there something else going on here?

Rack was pretty much silent till the fluid change...

Your "Porsche" power steering fluid is much thinner than the ATF. It will not only leak sooner if you have any wear on your seals but it will also hold air much longer than the ATF.

It may take you a week or two to get all the air out but it will come.

I used to run the special power steering fluid, but then I went back to the red stuff.

The problem with the ATF that the mechanic told me is that it'll swell hoses and cause leaks.

A week or two of normal driving or a week or two of bleeding???

normal driving. You DO NOT have to pull the cap off to bleed. There is a small hole in the cap that will work just fine for that. Drive it normal and whenever you park turn it lock to lock a few times before you shut it off. When everything is good you should see NO bubbles in the tank.

I am about to add powers steering fluid to my 86 1/2 944. Can I use Dexron 111 instead of plain dexron ?

That is what I use, it says on the bottle that it is "suitable for all cars requiring DEXTRON Fluid for power steering systems"

I'm assuming that reference to "86 1/2 944" is a typo, or maybe I'm missing something (which happens all the time)...Bruce
