If you had the original clutch in it, you were going to be replacing it at some point soon anyway. At least that's what you would tell you wife when the credit card bill arrives.

Just trying to add some personal experience.

and youve basically given me the same gameplan as Elliot and everyone else
Yes.

While I'm a noob when it comes to these cars, I've got some experience with shredded transmissions. So, wouldn't that make a lot of really loud noise? I mean unless it was nearly liquified (turned into shavings), which seems unlikely. Just my .02.

Good luck, OP.

i suppose you would be able to roll the car around freely with it in gear if one of the axles came off too though...

so still worth looking at.

although if that is the case you would probly hear it clunking around back there when you move it

Shot in the dark...is the shift rod still attached to the shift linkage on the transmission?

Yes, it probably would make a rather loud crack bam boom noise.

Just pointing out that the r&p is a possibility and should be considered, albeit 3rd in the line of the usual suspects~

well, i got home and looked at the CV's, they are both very tight and sturdy.

i put it in gear while the car was running and it did as before, nothing, so i gently squeezed it into reverse, i heard the gears start to grind, then i moved it into 4th at an idle and i could hear the sound of something spinning up behind me.

I was on the phone with Elliot and he said that it definitely points to the transaxle, but i wont be able to get the car off the ground until sunday and verify that, which means I wont be driving her to the meet on saturday, but i will be there.

Default WTB '86-'88 Transaxle near Orlando, Fl

ok, with the assistance and troubleshooting skills of Elliot we have determined fairly conclusively that the spider gears in the transaxle have eaten themselves.

so, now i am in need of a transaxle for my 1987 944 NA

i live in Lake Mary, Florida, if anyone near has one that will fit.

Elliot said '86-88 will will do the job perfectly, after 88 will possibly have different gear ratio, and before 86 wont have the electronic speedometer. i can deal with different gears if need be, but i would like to have a speedo

So, give me a buzz please, id like to get this on this weekend, if possible.

85.5-onward 944 transaxles will have the electronic speedo plug.

88 and 89 would be the most desirable to get, IMHO.

Glad to hear you diagnosed the problem. This is easier to deal with than the clutch.

and less expensive, but only if i can find a transaxle, which is proving a bit more difficult then expected so far.

You should give Ian a call at 944 Online.

They are located in Florida so you should be able to get it rather quickly.

When the R&P imploded on my N/A, it was cruising in 5th gear at 65 mph. It sounds a heck of a lot like what happened to you. There was no gear crunching, noise, etc. I just no longer could transmit power to the wheels, it was just like the car only had neutral.

Fortunately, N/A transmissions are cheap and easy to replace.
