my first was a 86 740 turbo, red/black leather. I loved it, it was like a tank, actually not too ugly, ran great, would burn out like you would not believe and hauled *** on the highway. turned over 200k and she passed on. then a 94 miata with some fun susp mods and then the 951.
havent had a wreck yet
the 951 is slowly getting turned into a DE/weekend car only as my pathfinder is over 200k and aging badly...hmm whats next?

My first car is my 951. I'm 20; I have driven this car for quite a while now and I am a good driver. I'm no professional of course, but I'm not a fool either. I have never even put a scratch on this car. I've Never been in an accident, and I see lot's of bad drivers out there that are not my age, but much older. It's all about experience and skill, it's not about age.

I think that most of the people reading/posting here are excluded from the "moron everyday driver" category. The real issue is youthful stupidy. My 14 year old think's that he knows everything, I WORRY about him. Yet I have the responsabilty as his parent to ensure that he will learn right from wrong, good from bad, and act accordingly. To do this I have to point out when he makes poor decisions, and use the situation to point out how he SHOULD have acted and why, and then hold him accountable to future behavor.
If parents (my ex) do not start this early (she didn't) we have problems (stupid irresponsible teenagers). It is simple training. Good = Reward, Bad = Punishment. This is a parents job, not the Government, not our schools, not TV or "pop culture".
I respected my 1st car (79 Pinto, not the exploding ones, those were 74-76) because I had to fix it if it broke. The boy will have to fix the car I just destroyed in order to learn to drive or have a car. Hopefully he will respect it. If he exhibits poor choices/behaivor he will loose the privelges he must EARN.
I have thought for years that teenagers get cars that are too powerfull too early. You must learn to control a car and use it wisely, hey I still scare myself in the 44.

I'd support raising the driving age to 18 from 16. We pay taxes so kids can take the school bus. Making driving lessons much better would help but it's probably unrealistic unless a private company got involved. I'd also support a 30 day suspension of license and mandatory driving school for the first moving violation if it happens within six months of getting a license at 18.

It applies to people born after either 89 or 90. It was kicked up to either 17 or 18.

i dont know why kids have been the only people accused of causing accidents in this post. sure the youth are the most at risk. but from what i can tell younger people drive more. didnt you when you first got your license. so naturally there going to be in more accidents.
i pray that the parents of those people get through these hard times as easy as possible.

Youths still cause more accidents than any other age group. They do not drive the most of any age group. Keep in mind that most older people have to commute to work. For my commute when I work in the summer (and most full time employees I know) it adds up to ~2.0 - 2.5 hours a weekday. This doesn't count all my other driving.
Don't try and tell me that little Jimmy goes to high school, commutes a total of 20 min and then proceeds to spend another 2 hours in the car every night. Asking your mom everyday if you can take the station wagon to 7-11, the Bowling Alley or a friends house every day after you got your license doesn't mean you spend a lot of time in the car.
As for a driving age change...I dunno. That's really tough to answer. For instance, I'm 19 years old and have no speeding tickets and no accidents. My record is completely clean. In 3 years of drving I can't say there weren't a few close calls. However, you NEED these close calls to make you learn and wake you up to be more alert. I can distinctly remember two times I would have certainly got in an accident had I not stayed calm and drove my way out of it (got that from my dad). Both times I was following a bit too closely and not being alert enough. My point is these events would have probably occured in a similar way, reguardless of age.
