A 400/600cc dual sport enduro or Suzuki SV 600 and MSF beginner rider course.

The dual sport will be a lot easier to learn on and a lot cheaper WHEN not if you fall.

Only one other person has suggested it, but I will say it.

ANY sportbike more than a 500 twin is too much. given that today's 600's rev to Mars and make MUCH more power than 750's of just 5 years ago I would say da kid's in fer trouble on a new sportybike of any size.

Dude, if you wanna be the only guy in a college town with one, something that goes to Africa on a tank of gas, and has the HIGHEST yee-HAW/ dollar ratio go with a Duke. Big thumpers rule the Earth. Wheelies 1301 will be your class for the Fall. Stoppies 1301 next Spring. And if you happen to be near some ULTRA twisty canyon roads, you'll drop any 600 like a pro (check Extreme Lean Angles 1302 for more details).

The bikes in the pics are SuperMoto race bikes (Yamaha leading a Honda), but KTM Duke is the street legal version. That's Carlos Checa (Yamaha MotoGP stud) leading Doug Chandler (venerable superbike legend).

quote- "Yeah! But they go crazy with the sport bikes... and they look much better when they sit on an sportbike... something to do with the angle of the seat"

Maybe, but like my (VERY UGLY) friend who bought a Hog sez "chicks go for rides with you on crotch rockets, they go HOME with you on a Hog." Insane as it sounds, but EVERY guy scores on a Hog. Why do you think all the mid-life crisis, insecure males buy them??

I remember the VFR400 (that unobtainable little tease!) when I was in highschool. Ditto on the RC30 (a spiritual manifestation of lust on wheels). Remember the Motorcyclist Magazine (or maybe Cycle?) cover on the FZR400 with the bike in a x-uped wheelie through the Corkscrew at Laguna? WHO was the legend under the helmet giving his patented stare at the lensman ??

Not kidding (on either account) with a Hog.... but they ARE fun to ride, so long as you understand what they're supposed to do.... some do a little more. I've passed quite a few sportbikes while riding a FXDWG (Dyna Wide Glida.. their 'sporty' big twin).. dragging pegs (the forward controls felt more natural and balanced.. lol), draggin pipe, dragging frame... d'oh!

As for the motards.. there's a KTM LC4 motard on ebay right now (comes with knobbies too, for the dirt) that looks like it might be a good buy. Wheelies - check.... stoppies, check.... pure, unadulterated hoolaginisim? Oh yea baby (and I was only on a 400cc motard, not a 620 beast w/ 60hp!!)

Alex, you should really come on buy sometime soon to try out the YSR - you're not going to hurt it. It's an 8hp, 150lb toy! lol... you can at least test out riding in my neighborhood before trying to get into an MSF class. Plus, I think I'll be picking up a new bike (01 ZRX1200) here really soon and I want to show it off to someone.

Wow.... reading all of this makes me want to ride also.... Hell just a small 250cc I think would be fun. I'm gonna have to look around on the used market for something small.... what would be good?

Bikes are a good diversion from a sports car! Never a dull drive if you have both...

My favorite mid-sized bike I've owned was a Honda CX-500 Custom - had a fairing, and only a rear rack (no saddlebags). It was a good balance between practical (hauling space) and fun - and darn good lookin'. Shaft drive, awesome mileage and reliability. Did I mention it was sharp?

But cheap, quality and good looks could be in the form of a decade or so old Nighthawk 650/700- it has very good looks, old enough to be cheap, and still a Honda. I got Honda-bias on the motorcycles too.

Well, cost effective starter bikes (figgure $500 for gear, and $1000~1500 for a bike) gets you:

Honda Rebel (250 and 450) - Cruiser
Honda Nighthawk (250, maybe an older 750) - standard
Suzuki Katana (600/750) - sportbike
Honda CBR600 (older) - sportbike

Any number of 'standards' from earlier than 1985 (you'd want to do your own work to make these cost efficient). I have a particular affinity for Hondas, but there are a lot of bikes out there from all marques.

The same offer I made to Alex, I make to you Aaron, if you want to take actions on your thoughts just ask me. I'm local and have NO problems with helping someone new get started on the right path (NOT like how I got started!!). From advice on gear to looking over perspective bikes - I can probably help. The only requirement is that you have cash in hand to act because deals pop up and are taken up rather quickly (but they happen often too).

I remember reading that about %40 of new 600 sportbikes get thrown down the street in the first 60-90 days of ownership.

Too much power too little experience too many hurt newbies.

Brian you'll love that ZRX1200, I've had a ZRX 1100 since '99 and it's a blast.

I'm not sayin' every Scooter Tramp is a fine looking girl, but down here in Houston (where the beer is cheap and the silicone is.... er, firm) you can stroll up to any trendy ice house on the Richmond Strip and see some HOT betty's hangin' around the UGLIEST scooter trash boys. The kinda girls who usually have a LOT of single dollar bills (wink). Just a theory my Hog riding (and UGLY) friend had. He was ugly (MAN, was he ever!) but he pulled chicks on his hog. Go figure...

Seriously, though, Alex, you oughta hook up with Brian. Any man who has the RC30 at the top of his list and has "an affinity for (pre '85) Hondas" knows what he's talkin about. Every young rider needs a guru-type. Mine helped me get my license, wrench on my ride, and taught me how to corner an old CB900F harder than most Ninja boys dared to (or 'high speed footpeg reshaping' as I liked to call it). My Freddie Spencer wanna-be ego trip only fueled by the fact that I wore a Spencer replica Arai (the grooviest helmet in the world).

A KTM Duke is SO on my list of toys to get in the coming year. Makes you look like a dirt-tracking, TT- winning GOD. Those things should have an XXX rating, and NO, that's not some 'X-treme' reference; more like OBSCENE, must-be-over-21, not for the feint of heart sorta fun.

Does anyone know any good motorcycle forums, for mostly sportbikes? I would really like to get one for the summer, but I don't think that would go over too well with my parents!!

I've done a bit of the 'footpeg reshaping', along with 'sidestand reshaping' and 'exhaust beveling'.. Funny that my first bike was an 83 CB1100f (whoooeeee, talk about a HANDFULL for a newbie!).

Conor, I don't think there are many non-riding parents who DO approve. As for forums, I don't have any first-hand knowledge of these, http://www.beginnerbikes.com/ , http://www.msf-usa.org/ , are 2 that come up quickly. The MSF is moe about training, but there should be some good links in there. Probably the Best forums will be one for a bike you can afford to buy. I'm on a Yamaha Seca II forum (my GF has one) which is known as a fairly good starter bike and we have a lot of new riders asking questions I never would have imagined. But any bike you can afford (not on credit) will likely be a learner bike or older with a group of enthusiasts who can and will help.

The Very tight family/group feeling you get with motorcycles (moeso than with Porsches IMHO) has spoiled me and part of the reason I own a P-car and am on Rennlist now. If you're on a bike and wave at another bike, 90% of the time you'll get a wave back - no matter if you're on a sportbike and they'e on a cruiser. The 10% are rich snobs (RUBs, Rich Urban Bikers) who're just showing off their money.. but they put so few miles on their bikes that you don't run into them very often.
